Under general supervision, the technician is responsible for independently accessioning, delivering, and processing laboratory specimens utilized in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of physical conditions. The technician receives patient specimens and related patient demographic information that correlates with physician orders. The technician may also be assigned to assist with sending out samples and/or assisting with Bone marrow collection and processing. Performs weekly QA maintenance and maintains processing instrumentation for safety and compliance purposes.
Essential Functions:
Ensures specimens are adequately processed and stored at appropriate temperatures in order for sample storage. (10%)
Maintains competency. This is demonstrated by ensuring specimens are not lost, receiving and processing specimens into the laboratory in a timely fashion, and organizing tracking lists from outside facilities completely and accurately. (10%)
Utilizing appropriate barcoded labels to receive specimens into the laboratory information system. (10%)
Processes and preserves specimens following instructions in procedures or laboratory information system. (10%)
Receives into the laboratory tracked specimens from surrounding clinics and saves all tracking sheets. (10%)
Reports test results in laboratory information system and maintains required documentation of results. (10%)
Meets turnaround time expectations and demonstrates clerical accuracy of reporting. (5%)
Reviews and resolves incomplete list and pending logs before end of shift. (5%)
Follows safety, life safety, and infection control procedures for self, patients, and others at all times. (5%)
Participates in training and teaching of new staff, students, or residents in the laboratory as needed. (5%)
Participates in required competency, continuing education, and proficiency testing within the required timelines for both processing and send out areas. (5%)
Promotes positive interpersonal relationships with fellow employees, physicians, patients and visitors. (5%)
Treats each individual with courtesy, dignity, empathy, and respect. (5%)
Consistently displays courteous and respectful verbal and non-verbal communications. (5%)
Maintain and sign off routine maintenance sheets. (0%)
Education:
High School Diploma or GED Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years 2 years' experience in specimen processing Required
Licenses:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to work professionally with patients and coworkers.
Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
Ability to receive and accurately process patient specimens.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to perpetuate teamwork.
Familiar with regulatory compliance in quality control and competency requirements.
Good communication and customer relation skills to ensure patient safety and quality processes in the laboratory.
Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented work in identifying, accessioning, and handling specimens for processing and testing.
Knowledge of safety and infection control practices to ensure a safe environment of care.
