DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:The Assistant Manager-Surgical Technicians works in the perioperative units at St. Charles Health System. These departments provide 24/7 specialized care focused on surgical and procedural treatment to patients throughout their hospitalization.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Assistant Manager-Surgical Technicians is responsible for providing support and managerial assistance to the department Manager by leading daily operations that can include: Staffing and scheduling; orientation and onboarding; education and competency assessment; budget monitoring; maintaining and establishing patient-care standards; promoting evidence-based practice. Implements quality and safety initiatives, engages in process improvement, ensures adherence to bargaining unit agreements and human resource management. The Assistant Manager applies standards for professional practice and focuses clinical care to enhance the experience for patients, families, and all others in alignment with the leadership approach of St. Charles Health System. The Assistant Manager creates and sustains a patient care environment that supports a safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, productive, and engaged caregivers. This position directly manages caregivers in perioperative departments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Develops staffing schedules and ensures adherence to staffing plan in accordance with established regulations.
Oversees unit assignments based on patient needs, caregivers skills/abilities, department resources and operational requirements.
Participates in hiring, coaching and monitoring the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high performing team that meets organizational and department goals.
Makes recommendations and provides opportunities for growth and development of caregivers and arranges for appropriate education and training.
Collaborates and assists leadership of the department with staff meetings and agendas.
Maintains and demonstrates an in-depth knowledge of technical principles, practices, standards, and techniques and applies this knowledge in accordance with St. Charles Health Care System policies and procedures and within laws and regulations governing nursing practice in the State of Oregon.
Participates in budget development and maintains operations within budget in areas such as managing staffing, productivity, patient flow, and triaging to meet patient needs.
Ensure that tech evaluations are completed at the end of each quarter and summaries submitted to facilitate professional growth and development.
Works with the perioperative educator when onboarding new staff to develop, maintain and assist educational needs in the department.
Monitors and ensure all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals.
Provides and oversees team delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.
Assists with planning, recommendation and implementation of clinical service delivery. Recommends policy changes which enhance nursing ability to achieve top performance.
Collaborates with teams to review processes and identify/implement opportunities for improvements, applying Value Improvement Practice concepts and tools.
Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments while providing 2-way communication of the St. Charles Health System mission and strategic plan.
Act as a liaison to other hospital departments and physicians and collaborates with house wide leadership to identify education needs and share expertise with caregivers.
Oversees vendor activities in the department and assists manager with evaluation and decision-making regarding equipment selection and pricing.

EDUCATION:
Required:Graduate of a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accredited program, ABHES (Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) accredited programor military surgical technologist program or a combination of education and experience.
Preferred: Bachelors Degree in related field.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required: N/A
Preferred: Current Surgical Technologist Certification through NBSTSA or NCCT. AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification within 90 days of hire.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: 4 years of direct patient care experience as a CST.
Preferred: 2 years previous leadership experience as a CST.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
