DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The Surgical & Trauma Service Lines at St. Charles Health System provides ambulatory, procedural, and inpatient care across the four hospital facilities and all surgery and trauma clinics. In 2022, we conducted 11,725 procedures, and 998 trauma activations.
POSITION OVERVIEW: The Bariatric Surgical Data Abstractors chief responsibility is to abstract, analyze and submit data per guidelines from the American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). This is accomplished through high quality data compilation, documentation, analysis, and entry into the MBSAQIP database of all eligible surgeries for the hospital. The Bariatric Surgical Data Abstractor works closely with the MBS Medical Director and the MBS Coordinator and other St Charles medical staff and caregivers to identify opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as may be identified. This position does not directly manage any other caregivers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Identifies surgical patients for inclusion in the program through the application of program inclusion/exclusion criteria and protocols.
Collects preoperative, operative, and postoperative data components for the program through the effective utilization of the hospital medical record systems and associated practice sites.
Provides data for MBS Committee and MDQA to ensure reliable data collection of case volumes and postoperative occurrences.
Ensures accurate and timely entry of data into the programs database.
Identifies streamlining and process improvement opportunities in the data collection process.
Demonstrates appropriate utilization of resources necessary to obtain valid, reliable data for entry into the program.
Utilizes software applications for data collection and analysis (Epic, PowerBI, Excel) for all eligible cases and long term follow up.
Responsible for the accurate and timely entry of data into the programs database and meets the caseload accrual requirement protocol.
Meets quarterly with Medical Director and MBS Coordinator to review post op occurrences and reporting.
Establishes effective working relationships with members of the hospital community, especially staff in the Bariatric Surgery, and ancillary departments whose support is necessary for the management and success of the program.
Contacts patients and/or families via telephone and/or written communications postoperatively when necessary for the purpose of identifying possible occurrences associated with bariatric surgical procedures performed at the hospital. (MyChart, Letter, Phone Call)
Serves as an educational resource on the MBSAQIP for internal and external audiences and supports the MBS Coordinator by collaborating on presentations and site survey preparation.
Participates in webinars, continuing education and attends annual conference as required.

EDUCATION:
Required: High school diploma or GED.
Preferred: Associate degree in a healthcare related field.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required: Metabolic and Bariatric Surgical Clinical Reviewer certification.
Preferred: RHIT or other related registration or licensure.
EXPERIENCE:
Required: One (1) year experience in one of the following settings: healthcare data entry or registry work, hospital, or clinic role, or medical records/HIM. Medical terminology. Experience in data entry with basic Word and Excel proficiency.
Preferred: Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge and experience. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience. Basic statistical knowledge.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.
