Purpose: This system leadership position is responsible for developing and executing strategic, market analysis and business planning activity for Duke Health.
Job Qualifications:
The Director, of Strategic Planning will supervise and manage project teams to develop Duke Health strategic plans across entities and geographies. This may include multiple services lines or stakeholders from entities across Duke Health.
Expertise level: Normally works independently, takes the initiative, follows through on work plans and assignments, checks progress against objectives, and reports and deviations. Seeks guidance on key issues as appropriate, and continues to develop expertise in the capability. Supervises more junior staff with limited input and direction.
Job Responsibilities:
Duke Health Strategic Planning:
Work in collaboration with Associate Vice President, Strategic Planning to lead and facilitate strategic planning processes.
Develop and lead processes and timelines for appropriate refreshes of the plan to enhance the competitive position of Duke Health and ensure timeliness of responses to changes in market and industry dynamics.
Staff planning processes including assisting in leadership retreats, working with leadership in priority setting, and tracking/preparing schedules and projects.
Responsible for organizing and directing planning efforts across Duke Health, including integrating clinical service line activities with business development/network development efforts.
Where needed, develop strategic plans and/or business plans to support the successful attainment of organizational, operational, and clinical service goals.
Lead a team of professionals in developing written plans that contain goals, objectives, relevant financial/clinical/market data, measures of success, and methods for evaluating performance to plans.
Maintain close working relationships at all levels of the organization to ensure the quality of planning deliverables and to synchronize the clinical services development plans with operational and financial planning.
Work closely with the Certificate of Need function in incorporating regulatory issues into strategic and business plans. Remain current on CON and other regulatory issues that affect the organization and assist in reporting implications to leadership.
Oversee structured analysis and business planning for new program development and new business opportunities.
Market and Data Analysis:
Collaborate with Director of Analytics, in the annual development and implementation of the Environmental Assessment for Duke Health and the various entities, leading in developing and communicating an understanding of the implications and strategic risks or opportunities that may emerge from the findings.
Interpret and present data to various levels of the organization in the spirit of "metrics that matter"-conscientious, understandable, and timely information that is able to be utilized for key decision making.
In support of strategic initiatives, organize and educate the Strategic Planning staff to report data in a comprehensive and informative way incorporating quantitative and qualitative information such as share, forecasting, competitive intelligence and field reports.
Direct the production and collection of relevant financial, clinical, and market data necessary for the planning process. This will include working with the Service Lines, Marketing, Hospital and Corporate Finance and other Duke Health departments.
Institutional and Divisional Support:
Identify opportunities to improve the financial and operational performance of Duke Health by coordinating efforts across entity boundaries.
Demonstrate outstanding leadership in developing Planning staff to meet the needs of Duke Health and its various entities. Set goals with staff in keeping with the Strategic Plan and department annual objectives and support the organizational development of staff through identification of appropriate training and educational opportunities.
Managing Staff:
The position will lead professionals (managers, analysts, and/or administrative staff) in the successful execution of the jobs and responsibilities of the Department.
Licensure, Training, and Policies
The position must ensure compliance with all mandatory DUHS policies, training, and health/safety requirements.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires a Masters Degree in Business Administration, Health administration or related field.
Experience
Director - Work requires five years of progressive responsibility in such areas as hospital administration, provider strategic planning, and business and operations planning, with proven success in the facilitation of strategic processes, business plan development and execution, and strategicanal yses. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OREXPERIENC E. Supervisory and/or leadership experience preferred.
Senior Director - Work requires seven years of progressive responsibility in such areas as hospital administration, provider strategic planning, and business and operations planning, with proven success in the facilitation of strategic processes, business plan development and execution, and strategic analyses. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE. Must possess prior supervisory experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Extensive knowledge of health care planning databases. Knowledge of Access, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint software.
Must be able to achieve results in a large, complex organization. Highly developed verbal, written, and analytical skills are necessary. Strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to facilitate meetings, and foster trust. Ability to present complex information to all levels of the organization. Must be able to manage multiple projects and processes simultaneously. Self-motivation and the ability to perform with minimal supervision.
Must be able to travel within the market area as needed.

Work includes project coordination and oversite of strategic plans with enterprise-wide importance.
Expertise level: Works independently, keeping leadership promptly apprised of work status, raising issues of risk to the appropriate level and at the appropriate time. Advises and provides guidance to other professionals. Seeks guidance on key issues as appropriate. Has a solid level of expertise in the capability and may be recognized as an authority in specific subjects, providing guidance to executives. Supervises staff independently to both empower and motivate them while also holding them accountable for key tasks and job responsibilities. Mentors and coaches' staff.
