The Indigenous Initiatives Program Manager is a position within the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Core, a highly collaborative and strategic department that creates, guides, and executes the strategic DEI plan for the Fred Hutch Cancer Center. The DEI Core is led by the Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer (VPCDEIO), and currently has several other professionals engaged in DEI practice.

Reporting to the Director, DEI Coaching, Client Services, & Culture, the Indigenous Initiatives Program Manager ensures the integration of Indigenous scholarship, perspectives, and approaches in our strategic efforts; mentors and supports researchers and clinicians; and collaborates with all members of the department in carrying out our initiatives and activities in alignment with Fred Hutch core values and the strategic vision of the Vice President and Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer.

This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.

Responsibilities

Primary/Essential Duties:

• Support through direct, collaborative, and cross-functional engagements, initiatives that align Fred Hutch programs and activities to the needs of Indigenous peoples and individuals. Champion practices that advance inclusive (community-based or practice-based) research, clinical trials, and clinical care with Indigenous populations.
• Advise the VPCDEIO and DEI Core department regarding strategic activities and departmental operations in alignment with Fred Hutch's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategic Plan.
• Through active partnership with all members of the DEI Core department, engage DEI principles and practices to understand and support among all marginalized/ under-represented populations at Fred Hutch.
• Work closely with the Indigenous Collaborative to effectively support its goals, priorities, and the implementation of the Indigenous Cancer Health Equity Initiative's Strategic Plan.
• Work in collaboration with all DEI Core team members and the Indigenous Collaborative, contributing ideas and practices through an Indigenous Lens, including in:
  • development of reports, presentations, DEI Forums, communities of practice, and the annual DEI Summit.
  • the design, development, and delivery of diversity education programs to the general workforce.
  • support and mentorship of Indigenous-focused affinity groups, work groups, and committees.
  • facilitate center-wide requests for consultation from Fred Hutch colleagues.
• Develop effective relationships with the Office of Community Outreach and Education (OCOE) team, supporting the intersecting work of the Indigenous Cancer Health Equity Initiative and the Recruitment and Retention Resource; the Office of Education and Training (OET), supporting Indigenous student and post-doc outreach and inclusive experience; and the Indigenous Collaborative as close partners for shared vision and work cohesion. Additionally, demonstrate the DEI Core's close partnership with the Office of Faculty Affairs and Diversity (OFAD), providing perspectives and support for diverse faculty.
• Support collaborative efforts to build and maintain relationships with Indigenous serving organizations and tribes in the region.
• In partnership with OCOE, serve as a resource to Fred Hutch researchers and their teams to support the development and implementation of best and promising practices in community-based participatory research (CBPR) and Indigenous research methods.
• Work closely with the Indigenous Cancer Health Equity Initiative and OET to develop and strengthen partnership with Washington State Tribal Colleges/Universities to support an ecosystem of Indigenous access and advancement in Fred Hutch workforce opportunities.
• Coordinate outreach and community-focused activities, such as elements of the Public Art and Community Dialogue program, that demonstrate access and inclusion for Indigenous peoples.
• In collaboration with the Indigenous Collaborative and OET, as mentor to diverse graduate students and post-docs including but not limited to all Underrepresented Minority students and trainees.
• Ensure that DEI Core utilizes pertinent assessment approaches and metrics to report data about Indigenous employees and patients in a meaningful way.

General Responsibilities

• Develop reports and presentations that communicate and represent Diversity, Equity & Inclusion concepts, data, tools, and resources to broad audiences as well as subpopulations of the institution.
• Advise the VPCDEIO on all matters of concern, institutional patterns, trends, inter/national topics and issues that intersect with this work.
• Serve as the representative of the DEI Core on Fred Hutch committees and task forces as assigned.
• Assist in executing internal affinity group initiatives and projects with external collaborators as assigned.
• Engage in ongoing and relevant professional development activities appropriate to this position.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Master's degree or equivalent education and experience required.
• 4+ years of relevant experience in cancer research area or Public Health; or Diversity, Equity & Inclusion training/education delivery and facilitation, preferably in areas of Indigenous health, Public Health or cancer care.
• Demonstrated understanding of, and support for, key concepts and other content in Diversity, Equity & Inclusion strategies, including anti-racism, decolonization, coalition building, etc.
• Deep knowledge of science education pathways through professional exposure or personal experience; demonstrated ability to engage with researchers/faculty and to mentor graduate students/postdocs.
• A passion and curiosity for anti-racist diversity and inclusion work and our Center's mission.
• Documented active engagement with or Tribal affiliation.
• Collaborative and conscientious leadership savvy.
• Strong understanding of Tribal Sovereignty.
• Ability to confidently work independently to complete tasks and especially collaboratively in a team -focused environment to meet the goals of this role.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, nuanced for creating intercultural understanding.
• Commitment to building and sustaining inclusive work environments and ability to model effective team member skills, including active listening, healthy conflict resolution skills, etc.
• Organizational skills, attentiveness to detail, and program development/management experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD preferred in the sciences or social sciences.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $99,445 to $157,144, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
