JOB SUMMARY
This position is a member of BSWH Public Safety and seeking to become a sworn police officer. A Police Officer Apprentice is one that is not yet sworn and licensed by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) and must attend an authorized and approved police academy assigned and enrolled in by the department. Upon successful completion of an authorized police academy and passing of the State of Texas TCOLE exam, the Police Officer Apprentice will then be classified as a police officer to further proceed with field training with BSWH Public Safety.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Attends approved Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) and successfully passes TCOLE exam within 180 days from date of hire.
Effectively participates in classroom discussions and group projects.
Maintain all physical and academic standards set by the academy.
Participates in the physical and defensive tactics of the training program, including firearms training.
Attends all mandatory department meetings and events.
Adheres to the policies and procedures set forth by the academy and BSWH.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
Must meet all the requirements of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) for holding a peace officer license and must be eligible to be a licensed peace officer in the State of Texas.
Current/Valid Texas Driver?s License with acceptable driving record.
Has never been convicted of an offense above the grade of a Class B misdemeanor or a Class B misdemeanor within the last ten years and no more than three (3) moving violation convictions within last 36 months.
Education Preferred - Associates Degree OR High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with thirty (30) completed college semester credit hours (or more) will meet the education requirements. OR - High School Diploma or GED Equivalent with a minimum of thirty-six (36) months working service in the Armed Forces of the United States of America with an Honorable Discharge will meet the education requirements.
Physical requirement wise, candidate mush have vision that is correctable to 20/40 binocular and normal hearing in both ears. They need to be able to walk extensively, bend, carry and lift in excess of fifty (50) pounds. Continuously stand/walk or lift/handle/carry material or equipment of moderate weight (20 to 50 lbs.) They also must be able to: continuously work outdoors in all kinds of weather; drive or sit in a patrol car for prolonged periods of time while remaining alert; understand verbal communication over the radio with background noise; and read and write under low light conditions.
Candidate must pass physical (medical) examination which includes a drug screen. They must be Tobacco free. Incumbents are subject to random alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continual employment.
Must have vision of no less than 20/40 in each eye (with any corrective lenses) for effective visual surveillance and correct identification of surrounding environment. Candidates must not have moderate or excellent impairment of depth or color perception.
Successful completion of selection process including but not limited to psychological evaluation, background investigation, and criminal history check.
Upon successfully passing the TCOLE basic peace officer exam the cadet will enter field training and be classified as a police officer.
Must have excellent interpersonal and public relations skills.
Must be able to react well in stressful situations.
Must be willing to work any shift for several locations throughout the DFW area.
Must possess written and oral communication skills to effectively communicate with all levels, both inside and outside of BSWH Public Safety.
Possess data-based and creative skills to find solutions to complex problems.
Must be proficient using PC and various software applications.
