This position is located within the Dental Service at the W.G. (Bill) Hefner Salisbury VA Health Care System (VAHCS), in Charlotte, NC. The purpose of the work is to provide direct laboratory support to staff dentists and indirect patient care. TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-09 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-8) in the Federal Service, that has given me the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Dental Laboratory Technician, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Experience should include use of dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; use of laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; use of precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; and construction of dental prosthetic appliances. At this grade level, additional qualifying specialized experience includes: constructing routine full and partial dentures, dental splints and obturators and model work for fixed prostheses; pouring primary and final impressions; fabricating custom trays and bite rims; packing, processing and finishing dentures/partials; and pouring and pinning final crown and bridge impressions. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. -OR- EDUCATION: Have successfully completed at least two (2) full years of graduate education or a master's degree that is directly related to the work of the Dental Laboratory Technician position. Such graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. NOTE: Licensed professional dentists will be considered qualified for any grade level if they have, in the aggregate, the required experience in dental laboratory procedures. It is necessary to climb onto counters in order to replenish plaster bins. The ability to lift plaster boxes weighing 30 pounds from the floor to the counter to the plaster bins is required. Constructs routine full and partial dentures, dental splints and obturators, model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products to support the treatment needs of staff dentists. Pours primary and final impressions. Fabricates custom trays, bite rims, night guards, provisional prostheses, etc. Mounts casts on articulators. Sets teeth for trial dentures/partials. Invests, packs, processes and finishes dentures/partials. Polishes prosthesis following adjustment. Repairs broken prostheses. Adds teeth to prostheses. Pours and pins final crown and bridge impressions. Observes dental abnormalities which may present design problems which require special treatment plans or suggestions. Advises in the design of unique prostheses for trauma and cancer patients where oral tissue is mutilated or missing and independently completes all laboratory procedures on these complex cases.
