Job Summary
Under minimal supervision, administers general, regional and monitored anesthesia care for scheduled and emergency surgical and obstetrical procedures. Performs anesthesia-related procedures at the discretion of and under the supervision of an attending anesthesiologist. Evaluates patients preoperatively and, in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist, formulates and carries out an anesthesia care plan including monitoring and recording patient reaction to anesthesia and modifying the anesthetic plan accordingly. Safely transports patients to and from an anesthetizing location and ensures appropriate care during the postoperative period.
Essential Functions:
Performs appropriate pre-induction evaluation of patient?s physical status. Completes a pre-anesthetic evaluation and discusses plan of care with patient and/or family, including risks, benefits, and alternatives. Formulates an appropriate anesthetic plan consistent with surgical requirements, taking into consideration the physical and emotional condition of the patient. Discusses anesthetic plan with the attending anesthesiologist. (20%)
Provides anesthesia care in a manner that is consistent with accepted standards of care. Recognizes urgent situations and responds in a manner that promotes the highest likelihood of a positive patient outcome. Requests consultation from the attending anesthesiologist as appropriate. (20%)
Documents patient care correctly; Maintains accurate and legible documentation of all patient health care provided, confidentiality of patient information and records, and accurate records for controlled drug administration. (10%)
Performs appropriate post-anesthesia evaluation, care, and discharge. Any and all post-operative complications are brought to the attending anesthesiologist?s attention. Transfer of patient care responsibility to appropriate personnel with communication of significant elements of care. (20%)
Takes on-call duty as assigned and maintains availability when on-call outside the hospital. Monitors patients. Attends monthly department meetings and assumes temporary administrative responsibilities when needed. Suggests or develops new revenue generating or dollar saving procedures. Participates in the development of more efficient patient care services. (10%)
Contributes to development of patient teaching or care manuals. Pursues and attains more than minimum CME credits. Actively participates in in-service education. Attends departmental teaching and M&M conferences. (10%)
Actively performs education and Teaching of Resident Registered Nurse Anesthetists. (5%)
Assist Anesthesiology faculty in the education and training of other trainees. (5%)
Education:
Master's Degree In directly related field Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years related experience. Required
Licenses:
RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required and
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
CRNA-Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist - ANCC - American Nurses Credentialing Center Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Skilled in the use and maintenance of anesthesia equipment.
Skill to communicate effectively with physicians, patients and other hospital employees.
Ability to assist with patients who may need ICU ventilators, high-risk intubations and facilitate fiber optic intubations.
Computer skills required.
