Role OverviewThe Managing Director, MSK Ventures, will lead MSK's venture capital initiatives, spearheading investments in oncology-focused startups poised to transform cancer care. Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, this role demands entrepreneurial vision, strategic expertise, and a passion for both creating and driving meaningful impact.
This is a rare opportunity to collaborate with world-class scientists, lead transformative investments, and expand MSK Ventures' influence in the biotech and healthcare ecosystems--all while advancing MSK's mission to end cancer for life.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Investment Leadership
- Develop and execute investment theses focused on oncology innovation.
- Source, evaluate, and negotiate early-stage investment opportunities with transformative potential.
- Lead due diligence, financial modeling, and market analyses to assess opportunities.Oversee portfolio strategy, fund operations, and risk management to optimize financial returns.
Entrepreneurial and Portfolio Support
- Mentor startup leaders on operational scaling, fundraising, business development and navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
- Provide strategic guidance to portfolio companies, fostering alignment with MSK's mission.
- Broker connections between startup leaders and key opinion leaders
- Monitor portfolio performance and liquidity events, delivering actionable insights to MSK leadership.
Ecosystem Engagement
- Position MSK Ventures as a leader in oncology-focused venture capital.
- Build strategic relationships with venture capitalists, accelerators, and healthcare innovators.
- Act as a champion for MSK's mission in external partnerships and startup communities.
- Can represent MSK Ventures as a thought leader at conferences and other public forums
Board and Stakeholder Communication
- Serve as the primary liaison to MSK's Board of Trustees, delivering detailed investment reports and strategic updates.
- As appropriate, secure board representation on behalf of MSK in portfolio companies and provide strategic guidance and oversight
- Collaborate with MSK scientists, the Office of Technology Development, and external stakeholders to align goals and outcomes.
Inspirational Leadership
- Inspire trust and alignment across all levels of MSK, from scientific teams to executive leadership.
- Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and mission-driven impact.
Key Qualifications and Core Skills
- Strategic Visionary: Proven leadership in early-stage venture capital, seed investing, or startup growth, with a record of scaling transformative opportunities.
- Oncology and Healthcare Expertise: Deep understanding of oncology, life sciences, and healthcare regulations, with the ability to translate innovation into measurable outcomes.
- Dealmaker: Demonstrated ability to catalyze, drive and close business development partnerships, financing and exit opportunities
- Financial Acumen: Expertise in investment analysis, capital formation, portfolio risk management, and strategic financial decision-making.
- Entrepreneurial Spirit: A natural innovator with a passion for startups and scaling groundbreaking ideas.
- Collaborative Leader: Demonstrated success building trust across diverse teams and stakeholders, fostering alignment and shared purpose.

Additional Information
- Location: This is a hybrid role based in New York City, with the expectation to be onsite for stakeholder meetings and collaboration. We are open to candidates willing to relocate.
- Pay Range: $400-450k base salary with a competitive and compelling bonus structure
