Charge Nurse/ Team Lead Registered Nurse needed to care for post-surgical Thoracic patients. May occasionally take patients if needed. Duties include patient bed placement, assisting with staffing and assignments, chart and regulatory audits and assistance with orientation and training. 

Thoracic Surgery Stepdown Registered Nurses care for post-surgical thoracic patients.( Thoracotomies, pneumonectomy, esophagectomy, lung transplant, lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS), thymectomy, nissen fundoplication and hellar myotomy. Nurses in this environment possess strong critical thinking skills and are able to make autonomous decisions. Nurses also have the opportunity to be involved in the patient’s progress from the immediate post-op period through discharge.

Thoracic Surgery is a fast paced surgical stepdown unit with 6 PCU beds and 18 floor beds. We care for complex thoracic surgeries, including lung transplant, thoracotomy, esophagectomy, thymectomy, hiatal hernia repair. We are a Dedicated Education Unit, specializing in training nurses. This unit provides experience for nurses who are interested in promoting to critical care, including hemodynamic monitoring, IV drip titration, chest tube management and critical thinking skills.

Role Purpose

Under the direction of manager, plans, directs, and coordinates activities of a unit on a designated shift. Performs direct patient care as needed and functions as clinical resource to nursing and support staff. Assesses, plans, evaluates and documents the nursing process of assigned unit as needed.
