Summary:
The Associate General Counsel - Employment & HR serves as a member of the legal team within the Legal, Risk, and Audit Department providing UNC Health entities and leaders with advanced level legal advice and legal services on a broad range of sophisticated employment issues including: recruiting, hiring, employee relations, discipline, terminations, reductions-in-force, leaves of absence, accommodations, wage and hour compliance, immigration, workers? compensation, organized labor matters, health/safety (OSHA), employee health/occupational health, mergers & acquisitions, and government contractor issues. Specific areas of responsibility include analyzing the impact and application of federal and state laws, including Title VII, ADA, ADEA, PWFA, Title IX, FCRA, FLSA, FMLA, WARN, USERRA, NLRA, OSHA, GINA, HIPAA, OFCCP regulations, and corresponding state laws.
Responsibilities:
Provide legal advice and counsel on employment law compliance and risk avoidance for the entire employee lifecycle, including but not limited to, hiring, recruiting, termination, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour, leave issues, pregnancy and disability accommodation, restrictive covenant agreements, and other employment-related issues. Direct, manage, and develop strategy for employment matters Respond to legal demand letters and other employment-related matters and support the HR teams in the handling of compliance, employee concerns, and pre-dispute conflicts. Direct, manage, and develop strategies for responding to complaints filed with government agencies and other pre-litigation matters, including EEOC charges, DOL complaints, and attorney demand letters. Convene and lead the legal team?s employment law practice group. Collaborate with cross-functional business partners to ensure and enhance employment law compliance. Serve as the unit legal advisor for UNC Health?s Human Resources Department, functioning as a thought partner to the Chief Human Resources Officer and members of the Human Resources Department leadership team. Support the development and execution of certain enterprise-wide initiatives, policies, and strategies. Engage and direct the activities of outside labor and employment counsel consistent with department policies. Advise employee health and occupational health teams on issues relating to immunizations, privacy, employee health records, onboarding clearance, ergonomics, and workers compensation issues. Prepare materials and conduct training for internal business partners on strategic initiatives and other relevant legal matters. Advise on and participate in the resolution of employment-related disputes. Draft, review, and negotiate employment-related agreements, policies, and procedures. Ensure that internal business partners receive effective, business-focused employment law support. Express ideas effectively in individual and group situations. Present ideas in clear, concise and organized manner, know when to use written rather than oral communications. Keep abreast of legal developments in employment law, understand operational needs and practicalities, and place problems in context. Identify and focus on appropriate issues, seek available information and facts and makes good logical decisions, think independently and consult with others as appropriate. Other duties as assigned.

Other information: Education Requirements: ? Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Licensure/Certification Requirements: ? Licensed to practice law in the state of North Carolina or be able to obtain a valid NC license to practice law within a year of hire. Professional Experience Requirements: ? Five (5) years of relevant experience with employment law in a law firm (with a preference for additional in house experience) Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: ? Excellent oral and written communication skills. ? Creative problem solving; aptitude to work collaboratively; ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple time-sensitive projects simultaneously. ? Strong leadership skills and client-service orientation. ? Ability to manage and prioritize employment matters and workload. ? Highly agile, results-oriented, tenacious, and resilient self-starter with ability to manage shifting client demands and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
