POSITION OVERVIEW:
Clinical Educator: The Clinical Nursing Educator & Instructor promotes nursing and allied health professional development and clinical practice scope guidance and competency through a matrix of roles including: learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, educator, advocate, consultant and researcher to support the organization in the protection of the public, provision of quality care and creation of a healthy work environment. The Clinical Nursing Educator & Instructor engages in the following standards of professional practice in order to succeed in the above roles as described: assessment of practice/knowledge gaps, identification of learning needs, outcomes identification, planning, implementation and evaluation.
This position also manages complex educational and practice programs/projects that require strong program management skills, including effective facilitation of cross functional teams and strong vertical and horizontal leadership relationship development skills, to drive improvements in clinical and professional role performance, patient care quality, cost and satisfaction outcomes among patients, families, and health care providers.
The Clinical Nursing Educator & Instructor utilizes evidence-based practices and research to develop timely learning and professional growth opportunities for clinical caregivers. The Clinical Nursing Educator & Instructor collaborates with the clinical and administrative leadership teams, as well as Compliance, Legal and Human Resource teams, Safety and Quality teams, and staff to identify areas of need as it relates to clinical practice and professional development.
In addition, this position serves as a role model of professional practice and behavior and is instrumental in creating a professional practice climate within the organization to meet the needs of the health care system mission, vision and values.

Nursing Instructor: Provide instruction for students in an Associate of Applied Science degree in a Nursing Program with Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse exit points. The instructor will be expected to teach primarily medical-surgical content as well as components of maternity, pediatrics, and mental health nursing; and pharmacology. The focus of student instruction includes application of relevant theoretical frameworks, development and refinement of psychomotor skills, integration of pathophysiology and disease processes, and the nursing care of hospitalized and community-based clients across the lifespan with simple to complex alterations in health. Nursing Instructors are expected to create a caring learning environment that will promote active learning and foster critical thinking.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Educator: Conducts systematic and ongoing learning needs assessments of individuals and/or groups using a variety of techniques and sources. Identifies educational objectives based on assessment data, quality improvement and regulatory/accrediting bodies requirements. Develops educational programs for nurses and allied health caregivers at all stages of their career development that are culturally sensitive, age appropriate, and family centered after a complete review, validation and prioritization of needs and within available budget, staff and other resources. Plans, prepares and maintains materials for use in educational programs for accuracy and relevance to the target audience. Teaches content as needed and/or assigned within informal settings with a focus upon improvement of skills and retention of knowledge using appropriate strategies, technologies and adult learning principles. Ensures that educational activities are implemented professionally and timely, adjusts content and teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs, and documents teaching/learning process and outcomes in accordance with standards. Conducts evaluations of assigned educational programs to determine if the purpose and objectives have been achieved and to identify areas for improvement in course design, content, and delivery. Evaluates the impact of educational programs on improving patient care, quality, cost and satisfaction.
Leader: Serves as a role model for education and professional practice and to promote excellence and competent practice. Integrates ethical principles in all areas of practice. Role models and promotes the concept of life-long learning. Evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing and allied health clinical practices, in collaboration with others when applicable, to ensure alignment with state and national licensing/certifying bodies, applicable rules and laws, regulatory bodies and organizational standards. Networks throughout the organization and in the community with the goal of exchanging knowledge and expertise. Markets staff development and continuing education programs. Develops standards for educational practice in own setting. Develops and/or provides input into the capital and operating departmental budgets. In leading complex project and program teams, demonstrates principles of project management including identification of plan, timeline, stakeholders, desired metrics and outcome targets, budget, communication and evaluation.
Consultant: Identifies opportunities for staff development on his/her own initiative. Collaborates with Nursing, Allied Health and System Administration to recommend educational strategies to ensure compliance with requirements and standards of external regulatory and accrediting organizations. Serves as an educational consultant working with intra- and inter-disciplinary teams to brainstorm, problem-solve, and participate in projects relating to policy, procedure, program development and strategic planning. Serves as a resource to staff designing needed educational experiences. Responds to requests for consultation from other hospitals and the surrounding community.
Change Agent and Facilitator: Demonstrates knowledge of select change theories and applies principles to support change within the organization. Facilitates the adult learning process, creating a climate that supports learning across the organization. Ensures that educational programs are congruent with organizational missions, values, and goals. Identifies and recruits internal and external resources for educational activities. Identifies which changes should be made through participation in various activities such as committees, projects, and strategic planning meetings. Participates in review of activities or processes for assigned area and department. Responds to changes in nursing and allied health practice and develops programs to support those changes. Facilitates the initiation of, adoption of, and adaptation to organizational change. Influences policies, procedures or legislation to create change. Fosters a positive attitude regarding the benefits and opportunities of life-long learning.
Researcher: Supports the integration of strong evidence and research into practice. Provides information to document effectiveness of role as a CPPD Specialist. Facilitates the development of staff members knowledge and skills in the EBP research process and use of strong evidence to improve clinical practice. Evaluates and utilizes research, current trends, future projections, professional organizations and other experts when creating and/or facilitating development of learning opportunities. Applies evidence-based data for improving current professional development activities, clinical practice competency. Applies research findings in the development of policies, procedures and guidelines. Participates in the research process in a variety of ways, such as serving as an investigator, protocol director, collaborator, data collector or evaluator.
Provide Instruction in Nursing: The Nursing Program Curriculum is taught using a collaborative teaching model. The focus of this position is skills instruction and clinical Instruction. Skills instruction is delivered in a Learning Resource Center environment that includes scenario-based skills instruction, supervised coaching sessions, simulation, and skills assessment. Clinical instruction is provided in a variety of healthcare settings, primarily St. Charles Medical Center in Madras and Prineville, using a model of direct student supervision, and a final term Capstone. Teaching assignments may include clinical assignments taught during the day and/or evening shift. Capstone clinical assessment may require travel to various locations, including Madras and Prineville.
Nursing Instructors are expected to perform all essential duties and tasks specific to the nursing department as outlined in the COCC Nursing Program Faculty Handbook.
Participate in the shared governance of the department and the college.
Facilitate the Nursing Program Curriculum: Perform essential duties and tasks specific to the nursing program, and additional assignments as delegated.

EDUCATION:
Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited college or University
Preferred: Master's of Science in Nursing preferred from an accredited college or university; Degree or Certificate in Nursing Education preferred
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
Required: Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Oregon by the OR State Board of Nursing. Current certification in Healthcare Provider BLS/ACLS/PALS required within 1 year of hire.
Required: Four (4) years of progressively responsible acute care nursing experience is required.
Preferred: Two years (2) as a Nurse Educator at unit or hospital system level. Experience with various teaching methodologies, accrediting bodies for nursing excellence (ANCC), shared governance, clinical professional advancement systems strongly preferred. Program management experience preferred.
