Under minimal supervision, the incumbent performs moderately and complex Histopathology staining procedures, maintains all quality control and maintenance records required in the laboratory, resolves problems with test analysis and consults with the supervisors, Director of Laboratory Administration, or the Director of Services when appropriate and according to established protocol. Histotechnician/Histotechnologist rotates with other members of the team, variable start time.
Essential Functions:
Responsible for the organization and efficiency of workflow processes throughout the Histopathology process; from receipt to storage. (10%)
Triages and executes daily work to ensure consistent turnaround times. (10%)
Performs specialized procedures such as decalcification, automated immunohistochemical preparation, manual special stains, etc. (10%)
Ensures proper labeling, handling, preservation, processing, preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens. (10%)
Determines proper fixative solutions in which tissue will be maintained. (5%)
Manages inventory (5%)
Provides assistance to the pathologist in a timely manner. (5%)
Ensures the highest quality during all phases of the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes. (5%)
Operates, maintains, and performs advanced troubleshooting on laboratory equipment, as well as any scheduled maintenance. (5%)
Provides troubleshooting assistance and support to technical staff and with the vendors to ensure uptime and testing turnaround times with equipment and for testing procedures. (5%)
Advises and consults with the appropriate supervisor regarding troubleshooting, investigations, and quality control issues. (5%)
Participates in performing quality control, proficiency testing, preventative maintenance, and environmental controls. (5%)
Trains for new technology or new testing as new technology or testing is released. (5%)
Participates in huddles or meetings and communicates quality activities inside and outside of the laboratory when needed. (5%)
Follows and ensures safety, life safety, and infection control procedures for self, patients, and others. (5%)
Provides education and strengthens teaching as part of the DH mission, assists with teaching as needed. (5%)
Education:
Post High School Diploma or Certificate Program Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years of professional experience at an accredited hospital as a Histotechnician/Histotechnologist, preferred
Licenses:
HTASCP-Histotechnician - ASCP - American Society for Clinical Pathology Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of histopathology techniques.
Proficient in embedding and cutting.
Knowledge of compliance of safety and infection control requirements, including the use of all medical and surgical instruments and equipment.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to perpetuate teamwork.
Familiar with regulatory compliance in Quality Control (QC) and competency requirements.
Good communication and customer relation skills to ensure patient safety and quality processes in the laboratory.
Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented work relative to completing decedent paperwork, in identifying, accessioning, handling specimens for processing and testing.
General knowledge of specimen sources and surgical procedures to accurately perform accessioning.
Basic understanding of surgical pathology coding.
Experience with Hospital Information System, Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to troubleshoot testing, equipment, and quality issues
