As a full-time member of our team, you'll have the opportunity to partner with two fellowship-trained surgical oncologists and three endocrine surgeons, while collaborating in a multi-specialty environment that includes experts in breast surgery, colorectal surgery, thoracic surgery, and non-liver transplant surgery.

Our Division of Surgical Oncology is expanding with continued clinical growth in hepatopancreatobiliary (benign and malignant) diseases, upper gastrointestinal cancers, soft tissue sarcoma, and melanoma. You'll play a pivotal role in our regionally dominant melanoma program and have the opportunity to expand our HIPEC program. Inova Schar Cancer is a CoC-accredited Integrated Network Cancer Program.

Surgical Oncologist Job Responsibilities:

• Conducting physical examinations and reviewing medical history to assess potential cancer cases.
• Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests like biopsies, imaging scans (CT, MRI), and blood tests to confirm cancer diagnosis.
• Developing individualized surgical plans based on cancer type, tumor location, and patient health.
• Discussing surgical risks and benefits with patients and their families.
• Executing complex cancer surgeries to remove tumors, including radical resections, minimally invasive procedures, and reconstructive surgeries depending on the cancer type.
• Performing lymph node dissection when necessary to assess cancer spread.
• Monitoring patients closely during recovery, managing complications, and providing pain management.
• Coordinating follow-up care with other healthcare providers, including medical oncologists and radiation therapists.
• Working closely with a team of specialists including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
• Participating in tumor boards to discuss complex cases and treatment strategies.
• Participating in clinical trials to evaluate new cancer treatments and surgical techniques.
• Teaching and mentoring medical students and surgical residents

Additional Requirements:

• Education: Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited institution
• Experience: Successful completion of physician residency program
• Certification: Board Certified/Eligible in Surgery and Complex General Surgical Oncology
