The Program Director of General Psychiatry provides general psychiatric care in Behavioral Health Services, which can include inpatient, outpatient, medical, and emergency settings. Diagnose and treat patients with complex, co-occurring medical, psychiatric and substance use disorders; homelessness, poverty; and treatment-resistance. In the case of the Medical and Psychiatric Complexity unit (MAPc: a 12 - bed, inpatient, secured psychiatric unit), treat adult patients, aged 18 years and older, with the presence of active medical and psychiatric conditions that require hospitalization. The Program Director works with, and reports to, the Medical Director of their service line, overseeing daily operations and coordinating care delivery to complex psychiatric patients. The role can involve developing and implementing policies and procedures for the service line and necessary training for healthcare providers and staff, as well as creating and monitoring performance metrics to ensure optimal unit functioning and patient outcomes.
Essential Functions:
Provide evidence-based, cost-effective clinical services including assessment, behavioral interventions, consultation, emergency medications, M-1 holds and other involuntary treatments such as seclusion/restraints, somatic treatments, triage, and other clinical services as needed. Obtain relevant medical histories, makes appropriate diagnoses, implements and directs effective psychiatric treatments including during high-risk and/or life-threatening conditions including during pregnancy and peri-partum periods, malignant catatonia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and serotonin syndrome. Services are appropriate to the age and developmental level of the patient. (60%)
Generate accurate and appropriate documentation of services in the medical record and write reports in a timely fashion. (15%)
Develop and implement policies and procedures, including attending meetings and serving on committees to help improve efficiency and patient care while fostering teamwork and improving communication between staff and physicians.Create and monitor performance metrics to ensure optimal unit functioning and patient outcomes.Participate and/or support academic efforts in quality improvement, research, and professional writing. (15%)
Act as liaison between the psychiatric care team and the hospitalist consult service, as well as between BHS/hospital leadership and providers. (5%)
Provide clinical supervision for trainees and advanced practice providers as assigned. (5%)
Education:
Doctorate Degree Graduate of an accredited medical school. Required
Work Experience:
Licenses:
MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required and
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques.
Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents and behavioral interventions used in patient treatment.
Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care.
Able to receive detailed information through oral communications; express or exchange ideas by verbal communications.
Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills.
Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic/racial backgrounds, skill levels and value systems.
Performs in a tactful and professional manner under stressful and emotionally charged circumstances.
A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite required.
