The UCLA Neuroscience Genomics Core (UNGC) is a genotyping, gene expression, epigenetic and sequencing core laboratory. UNGC offers genomic scale screening services utilizing a range of highly automated and specialized nucleic acid extraction, genotyping and sequencing platforms.
We are seeking a Staff Research Associate II who has a background in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, bioinformatics or a related field. They will primarily be responsible for operating a DNA extraction service in support of a large-scale population based genotyping project as well as a separate multi-year genetic study of severe mental illness. Primary tasks include but are not limited to: Receiving and logging blood and saliva samples. Preparing samples for storage and DNA extraction. Running and maintaining an automated high throughput extraction system. Performing DNA QC and curating the resulting genomic DNA and remnant blood samples. Maintaining computerized sample tracking database. Maintaining and ordering stocks (kits, plastics, supplies).
This work will take place in a BSL2 facility. You will be required to undertake a safety training course in bloodborne pathogens and to maintain all necessary safety certifications. We are seeking a motivated individual who is able to work collaboratively in a small group setting and who would also be capable of working semi independently in a swing shift (approximately 6:00 pm to 2:00 am; actual shift hours TBD).
Pay Range: $28.88 - $46.46 hourly.
Qualifications
Bachelor degree in the life sciences is preferred.
Must have at least one year of post-grad experience in biochemical techniques and molecular biology.
A combined experience of bench work and operation of automated systems including robotic liquid handlers, genome scale sequencers, confocal laser scanners and mass spec devices and etc. is required.
The position requires a candidate with meticulous and detail-oriented work habits, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
Experience with RNA (preps, RT-PCR or microarray work) is preferred.
Must have ability to work independently within an established framework.
Must work collaboratively in small group setting.
Proficiency with Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Macintosh operating systems, Microsoft Excel etc. Familiarity with Filemaker Pro is preferred but not required.
