Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

The McElrath research group in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is seeking a highly motivated Staff Scientist to work independently and take the lead on integrating emerging technologies and designing novel computational pipelines that can be applied to multiple projects focused on aspects of human immunology and infectious diseases.

This role will have the opportunity to work partially at our campus and remotely.

Responsibilities

• Conducting bioinformatic analyses and integration of multiple data types to define novel signatures and functionalities of host-pathogen interactions and mechanisms of immune protection.
• Developing efficient data pipelines for large datasets, including quality control procedures and analyses.
• Designing high quality visual display of data for presentations, publications and grant applications
• Applying and innovating single cell and spatial biology
• Incorporating analyses using machine learning and artificial intelligence tools when appropriate
• Develop independent and collaborative research projects suitable for external funding proposals
• Document experimental research in appropriate format for presentations, publications, and grant proposals.
• Assist the Principal Investigator with projects, supervising, training, and mentoring members of the laboratory.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• PhD degree or equivalent in bioinformatics, virology, molecular biology, immunology or genetics, or related field.
• Post-doctoral or research experience in a field relating to immunology and infectious diseases.
• Evidence of independent research, including publications in peer-reviewed journals and successful grant funding.
• Experience in supervisory and project management in an academic or biotechnology setting.
• Capacity to develop new research techniques and adapt to a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience working with experimental lab assay data.
• Self-initiation and ability to work independently as well as the ability to work in a cross-functional environment with engineers, biostatisticians, biologists, and medical doctors.
• Development of protocols and applications for externally funded research agreements, and experience writing and submitting research grants to funding agencies.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $72,000 to $185,000 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
