UC Santa Cruz Student Health Services is seeking a Case Manager skilled and dedicated to helping connect students with high acuity mental health needs to appropriate resources, higher levels of care, and to partner with campus units to support student success.

Case Management positions are either 12 month or 11 month positions. If a less-than-12 month position is available, the position would contain regularly scheduled unpaid, non-work periods in the summer during which the Psychotherapist remains an employee and retains health benefits, but is not at work.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) Student Health Services (SHS) is a full-service health facility offering clinical, educational, counseling, and psychiatry services to students on the UCSC campus. SHS is deeply committed to ensuring affordable, well-integrated, multidisciplinary healthcare that effectively supports the university's diverse campus communities through equitable access and culturally competent, high-quality programs and services.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a variety of mental health and psychological services to UCSC undergraduate and graduate students, including intake assessment brief individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, mental health outreach and workshop programming, consultation, and liaison relationships to support student mental health and well-being.

Other departments include Student Health Outreach and Promotion (SHOP), home of the Condom Co-op; CARE (Center for Advocacy, Resources, & Empowerment), the advocacy and prevention education office that supports survivors of sexual assault, stalking, and dating/domestic violence; and Student Insurance Programs.

Student Health Services employs approximately 150 staff including physicians, psychiatrists, case managers, lab scientists, pharmacists, nurses, radiologists, and many other clinical and administrative staff. SHS welcomes staff with interest and experience in working with students with a wide range of ethnic, cultural, and gender identities.

JOB SUMMARY

The Case Manager provides services designed to assist students in optimizing their educational experience and minimizing the impact of illness, injury, and emotional distress on their academic careers by coordinating mental health care through a network of campus and community resources.

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Integrative Behavioral Health, the Case Manager provides mental health care, case management coordination, and support to the Student Health Services (SHS) and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) clinical providers. This position will also work with a variety of Division of Student Success (DSAS) departments that serve students, as well as provide consultation services for faculty and staff in dealing with distressed students, coordinating mental health resources and services with clinical providers, residential life, and the colleges.


APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $94,440 - $122,189 / annually if 12 months ($7,870 - $10,182 / monthly if 11 months). Salary commensurate with years of licensed experience as well as specialized skills and qualifications.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

70% - Case Management

• Performs assessment and consultation to the medical team on the biopsychosocial factors relating to diagnosis and recommended treatment of patients.
• Works collaboratively with primary care providers, clinic nurses, medical assistants, psychiatrists, mental health providers, and individuals from other clinical units to provide culturally competent care for a diverse student population.
• Monitors client/patient progress with recommended treatment plans and assures effective coordination of care between providers at CAPS, Student Health Center, hospitals and other treatment providers.
• Provides case management support to primary care providers at the Student Health Center regarding mental health and physical health needs.
• Serves as liaison between the Student, hospital, treatment programs, campus and community resources. Develops and aids in the use of community resources. Maintains current knowledge of University Health Services, campus, and community resources.
• Professionally responsible for the soundness and validity of recommendations, services, and referrals but is expected to seek advice from supervisor on unusual or uniquely complex client responses or on problems outside their area of expertise.
• Assists with monitoring and tracking students as they move through the mental health system, which includes Counseling and Psychiatry, hospitalization, and referral to off-campus outpatient treatment.
• Provides triage crisis assessment and crisis intervention.
  
  
  15% - Consultation and Outreach
  
  
• Provides consultation to other departments, staff, administrators, and faculty to enhance the social, personal, and academic functioning of students with severe psychological difficulties.
• Functions as a resource and may provide educational and consultative services to groups and organizations.
• May participate in on-campus and community groups and consortiums to improve efforts for integrated behavioral health care.
  
  
  15% - Counseling and Clinical
  
  
• Provides brief counseling and psychotherapy with undergraduate and graduate students (individuals, couples, and groups) with a broad range of co-occurring medical and mental health needs, functional and socioeconomic limitations.
• Performs behavioral interventions, motivational interviewing, brief psychotherapy and case management on a full range of cases including high-risk concerns.
• All licensed staff will provide coordination and consultation for the After-Hours Crisis Services as scheduled.
  
  

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
• Valid California licensure, in good standing, in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy.
• Expertise in clinical case management in a medical or integrated behavioral health setting.
• Strong knowledge and experience providing psychological diagnoses, brief interventions, and case management services to university students. Ability to rapidly provide these services while working in a fast-paced environment where interruptions may be frequent and task-shifting is required.
• Demonstrated multicultural competence in mental health service provision. Knowledge of how race, ethnic identity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, privilege, and multiculturalism relate to psychological service delivery in a university setting.
• Broad skills and competencies associated with providing multicultural counseling services and experience with communities underserved in mental health care.
• Experience providing service to a young adult population.
• Solid familiarity with a wide range of psychological interventions including harm reduction, assessment, crisis intervention, crisis management, and brief psychotherapy.
• Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team of mental health and health providers.
• Demonstrated skills and experience in developing liaison relationships and consulting with diverse faculty, staff, public and private mental health providers, and students regarding student mental health issues.
• Highly effective written communication skills.
• Highly effective interpersonal and verbal communication skills; Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner.
• Flexibility and willingness to accommodate client needs and colleague requests for support.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct.
• Experience in the use of electronic/medical records systems. Must be computer literate.
  
  
  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience as a case manager in a behavioral health care setting (i.e. Behavioral Health Unit, Day Treatment Program, Outpatient Mental Health Center). Experience providing behavioral health interventions in a medical setting.
• Demonstrated ability to work with required computerized clinical record keeping systems.
• Counseling experience in a college/university setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of a university environment and of the developmental issues and difficulties typically encountered by college students.
  
  
  

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Valid California licensure, in good standing, in Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy
• Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
• Selected candidate will be required to take a TB test within 60 days of hire.
• Upon hire, selected candidate will be required to: Complete HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accessibility) training within 30 days of hire.
• Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
• Job will require occasional working of non-traditional hours
• The selected candidate will be required to work primarily on campus, with periods of remote work possible based on operational needs. If a hybrid work schedule is confirmed, the selected candidate must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and be able to fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
• Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
• Comply with current Student Health Center employee health safety requirements for health care workers as defined by state and federal regulatory agencies; current health safety requirements to be discussed during interview.
