The Cytologist is responsible for detecting, differentiation and diagnosing the presence or absence of disease in gynecological and non-gynecological samples. This position assists the Pathologist with a variety of fine needle aspirates.
Essential Job Functions:
Performs microscopic examination on gynecological and non-gynecological specimens, differentiating and identifying all cells on the slides using established cytologic criteria.
Detects, selects and clearly marks cells most representative of pathological processes present and prepares a provisional diagnosis for all gynecological and non-gynecological cases referred to the cytology supervisor or pathologist.
Interprets acceptability of specimens received for testing, communicates correct specimen collection, transport requirements, and specimen unacceptability issues to appropriate caregiver in a timely manner assuring that documentation is completed according to standard operating procedure.
Assists in the collection of Fine Needle Aspirates following standard operating procedure.
Exercises initiative and judgment in investigating, troubleshooting and resolving QC failure, informs next level of authority as necessary and documents all action taken. Utilizes available technologies to record and retrieve data in the daily workflow.
Prepares a final diagnosis using established cytologic terminology for gynecologic specimens reported as within normal limits.
Performs accessioning, routine staining and coverslipping of cytologic slides.
Maintains clear and concise specimen identification throughout the entire analytical process.
Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

For CLIA Requirements, an official transcript and/or diploma must be on file.
Employee obtaining CT certification(s) after January 1, 2004 will be required to demonstrate evidence of ongoing maintenance of certification
