On behalf of the executive leadership team and the selected search committee representing the Department of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and Children’s Hospital of Richmond (CHoR), CareerPhysician, the national leader in academic child health executive search is pleased to inform you of the national search to identify a transformational thought leader in UME and/or GME education to serve as the next Pediatric Residency Program Director at VCU and CHoR.
With unwavering support from executive leaders within the Department of Pediatrics, the Children’s Hospital, and the Children’s Hospital Foundation, the selected leader will be charged with designing and implementing a strategy that accounts for curriculum development in clinical and didactic environments to meet the standard set forth by the ACGME, while maintaining a culture that fosters innovation and advancements to ensure future pediatricians are offered all that is essential to succeed.
The Pediatrics Residency Program at CHOR, VCU is an ACGME accredited program, established in 1934, with a long and rich history emphasizing balance, diversity, and flexibility. It is designed to provide residents with exposure to a wide variety of pathology and patient care environments, while serving the urban, suburban, and rural pediatric populations of Richmond and surrounding areas.
The selected Program Director will be charged with:
Oversee the implementation and reassessment of the 3-year curriculum in accordance with the proposed ACGME changes to include 40 weeks of rotations individualized to each resident.
Develop a more formalized simulated procedural skill curriculum and identify funding strategies to protect faculty time to run simulations
Develop strategies to improve the pediatric board pass rate of the program
Address the increasing inbox message and phone call volume for the resident clinic, integrating clinical demands and formal curricula to teach residents triage skills
Explore technical innovation and the use of artificial intelligence in medical education
Programmatic strengths include:
Broad based patient population encompassing both inpatient and outpatient pediatrics.
Flexible scheduling with 50% of time in outpatient experiences and 50% in inpatient experiences.
An established and successful Coaching and Advising program.
A robust Holistic Review Process for Recruitment and successful match record, despite national trends
Adequate protected time for funded APD, Rotation Director, Coordinator, and Coaching roles to provide programmatic support
Two fourth-year Pediatric Chief positions at the instructor faculty level
The residency program includes 17 categorical pediatric residents per year, along with 16 Med-Peds residents and 1-2 Child Neurology Combined program residents as well as over 30 outside rotators from 9 different programs both internal and external to VCU.
Candidate Qualifications:
Board certified or board eligible in General Pediatrics and/or a Pediatric Subspecialty
Experience with clinical care of patients ages birth to 21
At least 5 years of educational leadership experience with house-staff or medical students
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Preferred: Interest and experience in working with General Pediatrics or a Pediatric Subspecialty in which they are trained.
