The Clinical Pharmacy Manager (Manager) has operational and budgetary responsibility for area of assignment, under administrative direction. The Manager has responsibility for all clinical personnel assigned to the Clinical Pharmacy Division of the Department of Pharmacy to include hiring, evaluation, assignment, and disciplinary procedures. The Manager has responsibility for development and implementation of policies and procedures for the area of assignment. Provides comprehensive pharmaceutical care to by delivering clinically oriented pharmacy services. These responsibilities include patient’s education and counseling of medications, performing medication histories, and ensuring optimum patient outcomes of therapy; In addition, provide training and teaching to new medical residents, medical students, and ancillary professional staffs: i.e., dieticians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and others. Supervises all activities of the staff as well as set goals and objectives for the division.
General Administrative Responsibilities
Collective Bargaining •Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals •Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions and working meetings
Discipline •Document, recommend and effectuate discipline at all levels •Work closely with labor relations and/or labor counsel to effectuate and enforce applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements •Initiate, authorize and complete disciplinary action pursuant to CCH system rules, policies, procedures and provision of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Supervision •Direct and effectuate CCH management policies and practices •Access and proficiently navigate CCH records system to obtain and review information necessary to execute provisions of applicable collective bargaining agreements
Management •Contribute to the management of CCH staff and CCH’ systemic development and success •Discuss and develop CCH system policies and procedures
Consistently use independent judgment to identify operational staffing issues and needs and perform the following functions as necessary; hire, transfer, suspend, layoff, recall, promote, discharge, assign, direct or discipline employees pursuant to applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements •Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when necessary
Typical Duties •Serves as Co-Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee. Prepares and distributes the monthly P&T Committee meeting packets, prepares and distributes monthly Executive Medical Staff Summary reports, communicates and implements P&T Committee actions. •Coordinates the publication and distribution of the Pharmacy Residents Newsletter, Drug Formulary and Drug Formulary Updates, as well as managing the respective intranet sites and FDA alerts. •Manages the hospital formulary, member of the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) committee, reviews high-cost medications, and analyzes proper use of medications versus cost savings. •The job duties are in addition to the requirements and responsibilities of the clinical pharmacist and the medication assistance program team members. •Responsible for the development, implementation, assessment, and management of the clinical pharmacy services and the medication assistance program of the division. •Supervises the clinical pharmacy and medication assistance program services extended to patients and other professional staffs. •Responsible for the operational and budgetary obligations of the Medication Assistance Program and Clinical Division of Pharmacy. This includes the overall assessment of medication assistance program team members and the assignment of clinical pharmacists to appropriate patient care unit, clinics, or service areas and the workload which accompanies these assignments. •Coordinates the training and continuing education activities of the departmental staff. •Oversees the development and implementation of quality improvement activities, drug utilization evaluation, pharmacy "help desk," and other hospital-wide responsibilities. •Assists the Director of Pharmacy in the day-to-day functional workload and service demands on the pharmacy (i.e., attend meetings on behalf of the Director of Pharmacy; provide staffing support and coordination as needed for the ambulatory pharmacies). •Oversees and assists the Pyxis coordinator with any Pyxis queries. •Responsible for the evaluation of medication assistance program team members and clinical pharmacists' performance via the Department of Pharmacy pre-defined Standards of Practice. Responsible for the enactment of any disciplinary proceeding if necessary. •Oversees and assists medication assistance program team members and clinical pharmacists in the development, implementation, assessment of the inter-intradepartmental pharmacy educational and training programs. •Acts as Residency Program Coordinator or Director. •Works to improve current residency program. •Writes policies as needed for the pharmacy residency program and clinical services as needed.
Coordinates the staffing and assignments of medication assistance program team members and clinical pharmacists scheduled in the ambulatory clinics and inpatient services. •Prepares and provides the Director of Pharmacy any management data reports regarding new services, products, equipment, and supplies. •Responsible for reviewing/assigning drug evaluation review to clinical pharmacists for the purpose of assessing formulary additional requests •Assists in the recruitment of new staff. •Serves as link between medication assistance program team members and clinical pharmacy division and the Department of Pharmacy administrative staff. •Evaluates and approves requests for time off for medication assistance program team members and clinical pharmacists with a focus on the day-to-day functional workload and service demands on the Department of Pharmacy services. •Serves as director of Anti-coagulation clinic or designee and oversees other designated clinical services. •Assists in the management of inpatient services when needed. •Performs drug utilization review, as well as participate in completing DUR’s for department needs. •Develops drug therapy and tend analysts to include development of clinical reporting tools to assist in improved patient outcomes and collect data that substantiates improved patient outcomes and collect data that substantiates improved patient outcomes. •Performs other duties as assigned per Pharmacy Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education or equivalent, is required. (Must provide Official Transcripts at time of Interview). •Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), is required. (Must provide Official Transcripts at time of Interview).
Successful completion a Pharmacy Residency, is required.
Licensed as a Pharmacist in the State of Illinois in good standing, is required. (Must provide proof at time of Interview).
Three (3) years of experience as a Clinical Pharmacist, is required.
Two (2) or more years of experience in a pharmacy supervisor or managerial role within a pharmacy setting, is required.
Inpatient hospital experience within the last five years with business and financial responsibilities, is required.
Proficient in operating personal computer and associated applications used to develop presentation, proposals etc. (Microsoft Office), is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of a Clinical Pharmacy Residency within an acceptable clinical practice setting, is preferred.
Two (2) or more years of experience in a pharmacy supervisor or managerial role, acquiring clinical and management experience within a clinical setting, is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Must possess knowledge of supervisory styles or philosophies of management and the application thereof.
Considerable knowledge of modern pharmaceutical principles and practices
Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
Demonstrated analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking, and conflict management/resolution skills
Excellent interpersonal communication skills necessary to provide pharmaceutical services to a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
Good written and verbal communication skills

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements.
