Description The School of Dental Medicine (SDM) at Stony Brook University (SBU) is seeking applications for a full-time (12-month), tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full or Associate Professor in the Department of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. The position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dental Medicine and is a member of its Executive Committee. Major administrative and leadership responsibilities for the department include recruitment, scheduling, and development and evaluation of staff and faculty. The chair ensures department goals are in alignment with the strategic plans of the school, Stony Brook Medicine (SBM) and the university. The chair is responsible for the management of financial, space, and equipment resources of the department, and has oversight of dental student and orthodontic/pediatric dentistry resident curriculum and clinical operations. Other duties involve supporting the school's compliance with SBU, SBM and SDM best practices; continuing research and scholarly endeavors; serving on select school committees; engaging in school, university and professional dental organization governance; connecting with and cultivating department alumni; and participating in the school's affiliated faculty practice.
Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a desire to create an environment that develops strong and supportive relationships with students, residents, staff and faculty. The successful candidate will be expected to promote collegiality, collaboration, and cultural diversity among members of various education, research, and service communities. An understanding of, and experience in, working within a complex educational, service, and research organizational structure is necessary. A willingness to serve as a role model and advocate for the ideals of professionalism and high ethical standards in a health science educational setting is essential.
Salary, administrative augmentation and academic rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications Required Qualifications: DDS/DMD degree (or foreign equivalent) from a CODA-accredited dental school/college or international equivalent degree. Certificate from a CODA-accredited advance education program in orthodontics and/or pediatric dentistry. Board Certification by the American Board of Orthodontics and/or the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. Didactic and clinical teaching experience at a dental school/college. Tenured faculty member at present institution and qualifies for continuing appointment (tenure) under the Guidelines for Faculty Appointment and Promotions of the SDM. Record of scholarship in a defined area of expertise. Five years or more of academic dental administrative and supervisory responsibilities. Seven years or more of clinical experience in orthodontics and/or pediatric dentistry. Eligible for, or has, a New York State Dental license or a Restricted Dental Faculty license.
Preferred Qualifications PhD and post-doctoral training in a related field. Active NIH funding. Collaboration in grantsmanship with various dental, health care and other disciplines. Participation in CODA accreditation process - dental school/college and advanced education programs in orthodontics and/or pediatric dentistry. Demonstrated record of recruitment, mentoring and retention of faculty. Participation in organized dentistry at the local, state or national level.
