Summary:
The Inpatient Nurse Supervisor is a transformational leader responsible for supporting the nurse manager in the administrative duties of the unit, especially during off-shifts. The inpatient Supervisor will provide leadership by collaborating with members of the healthcare team to maintain standards for professional nursing practice in the clinical setting. Participates in organizational and unit-based quality improvement activities, and provides input on standards of care. Must provide patient care on an as-needed basis and maintains clinical competencies with the potential for weekly patient care shift assignments. This role works in coordination with the nursing leadership on an assigned unit, department or service to ensure the work is accomplished safely and effectively, and requires demonstration of leadership, clinical, and interpersonal skills. The supervisor collaborates with the manager/director on clinical and non-clinical operations and serves as the leader support when the manager/director is unavailable in directing the provision of nursing care on an assigned patient care unit or units on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis. The person in this role is responsible for supervising, directing, coaching and mentoring staff under the supervision of the nurse manager/director to meet goals and objectives.
Responsibilities: 1. Provides leadership in day-to-day operations and provides input to the Nurse Manager regarding the attainment of unit goals. In coordination with the manager, the Supervisor creates and promotes an environment conducive to recruiting and retaining staff and provides feedback to the manager to assist in hiring, promoting, transferring and terminating staff. 2. Assists the Nurse Manager by providing assigned staff with performance feedback and opportunities to set professional goals. Models and promotes behaviors that effectively give continual feedback to staff and colleagues and directly supervises professional and non-professional staff which can include mentoring and coaching new and lesser experienced employees, ensuring that employees are properly educated/trained, tracking licenses and certifications, and leading activities that promote employee engagement. 3. Provides, coordinates, and implements educational programs to meet identified learning needs of staff, patients and families. Promotes and ensures staff participation in continuing education, orientation, competency, in-service and staff development offerings. Participates in development and implementation of competency initiatives. 4. Provides managerial support as required. Develops, implements, and participates in quality improvement processes activities. Works with members of the healthcare team in activities designed to improve patient care outcomes. Leads, coordinates, and participates in departmental projects with follow-through and appropriate follow-up, along with other projects and duties as directed by the manager to achieve goals and outcomes. 5. Develops, implements and evaluates new and creative approaches to meeting goals. Leads, participates and promotes performance improvement initiatives that focus on identified patient safety or quality of care opportunities. 6. Assesses available resources to provide patient care and recommend changes in staffing based on unit needs and costs. Guides and supports staff on nursing processes for providing/delegating patient care, safety issues, regulatory standards, adherence to standards of care, policies, and procedures, and anticipates and resolves patient care and personnel issues. 7. Promotes effective working relations and works collaboratively as part of a department/unit team inter and intra-departmentally (pharmacy, lab, radiology, registration) to facilitate the department?s ability to meet its goals and objectives, resolve issues, and improve work flow processes throughout the department. 8. In collaboration with the manager, is responsible for effective and efficient fiscal management of department operations to ensure proper utilization of organizational and financial resources. 9. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned as needed.

Other information: Education Requirements: ? Graduation from a school of professional nursing. Bachelor?s degree in Nursing preferred. Licensure/Certification Requirements: ? Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. ? Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification Professional Experience Requirements: ? Requires three (3) years clinical nursing experience, two (2) years management/supervisory experience preferred. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: ? Experience with computer systems required, including web based application and some Microsoft applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access required.
