The Lab Director will be responsible for providing overall direction in order to service clients and patients in accordance with contractual obligations, industry standards, and regulatory requirements for several specialty laboratories located at three testing sites which include: Anatomic Pathology in Burlington, North Carolina, the Center for Esoteric Testing Laboratory in Phoenix Arizona and Colorado Coagulation in Denver Colorado as well as support financial projects at these locations.
The director will provide oversight to an employee mix of approximately 350 technical and operational team members, including supervisors and managers. The director will be responsible for developing and executing strategic business priorities, ensure adequate personnel and resources to provide market leading service and improve margins by managing expenses and driving innovation to realize operational efficiencies. This role works closely with supply chain, field operations, medical and scientific leadership, corporate operations, commercial leadership and the finance team.
The successful incumbent must be able to function with autonomy while reporting directly to the VP of Lab Operations. The Lab Director will be accountable for achieving laboratory performance metrics, fostering leadership development, inspiring an engaged workforce and meeting financial targets. The ideal candidate must be able to influence supply chain partners to achieve technical and operational goals.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Direct operational activities including technical and non-technical operations of the Anatomic Pathology department at Burlington NC, Colorado Coagulation in Denver and Center for Esoteric Testing in Phoenix Arizona.
Fiscal oversight of the departments, including management of labor, reagent, and capital expense as well as vendor/contract management.
Lead strategic projects related to launchpad initiatives which include supply management, automation initiatives, reduction in premium labor expenses and optimizing operational excellence.
Responsible for acquiring additional capital resources necessary to maintain service levels by creating business plans and submitting capital expense requests.
Directly supervise and mentor laboratory managers and have accountability for all staff within the departments.
Ensure the laboratory provides market leading service levels to meet the needs of our customers and patients, including meeting thresholds for key performance indicators.
Support business development, participate in external customer relationships, and collaborate with internal customers to meet business objectives.
Prepare and provide presentations to external and internal customers
Collaborate with the medical director, technical director, QA, laboratory managers, discipline directors, other laboratory directors, and corporate operations
Oversee laboratory audits, with accountability to implement corrective, preventative, and effectiveness actions for findings and deficiencies.
Oversee training, talent development and employee engagement initiatives, ensuring policies and procedures are followed.
Keep the VP of Operations apprised of all relevant issues
Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
Bachelor?s degree required, preferably in life sciences
Master?s in Business Administration strongly preferred
Strong financial acumen is required
Previous experience managing people leaders is required
Prior experience in a high volume, clinical laboratory environment highly preferred
ASCP, AMT, or any other relevant laboratory certifications are a plus
Proven success in training and developing both technical and non-technical employees
Previous experience working in an autonomous environment with a high degree of accountability
Ability to problem solve and provide solutions under minimal supervision
Strong presentation and communication skills; both written and verbal
High level of attention to detail with strong organizational skills
Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint
Ability to handle the physical requirements of the position
