The Cardiology team is seeking an Educational Liaison! Approximately 50% of children with complex congenital heart disease have developmental delays or disorders and require special education services or educational accommodations.
The Educational Liaison is responsible for serving as a liaison between the healthcare and school settings to 1) ensure the neurodevelopmental and special education needs of patients with heart disease are being met, 2) support positive school re-entry after hospitalization, and 3) support school-based initiatives within the Nemours Cardiac Center.
This position is expected to be hybrid (3 days in person, 2 days remote), Monday- Friday. Travel to local schools to participate in meetings for IEP development/review and school-based initiatives is expected.
Responsibilities:
- Communicates with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals to identify patients with neurodevelopmental and special education needs requiring educational liaison support.
- Communicates with and educate families about neurodevelopmental and special education needs/services and their rights within the school system.
- Communicates with school personnel about the neurodevelopmental and special education needs of patients with heart disease and advocate for needed services and accommodations.
- Develops programs and/or resources to educate school personnel about specific diagnoses and related needs.
- Reviews neurodevelopmental, neuropsychological, and psychoeducational reports and IEPs.
- Attends IEP meetings in person or virtually (based on distance) .
- Provides input and recommendations to the healthcare team to ensure that the patient's educational needs are integrated into the plan of care.
- Supports positive school re-entry after hospitalization.
- Supports school-based initiatives within the Nemours Cardiac Center.
- Additional miscellaneous duties and responsibilities, as may be assigned from time to time by employee's supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education or related field required; Advanced degree preferred
- Minimum three years experience working in K-12 school setting is required
- Preferred teaching certification, Special education certification, or Education Administration certification
- Experience in special education or administration is preferred
