Mass General Brigham (MGB) invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Dermatology. MGB is an integrated academic healthcare system which includes its two founding academic medical centers, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), three nationally renowned specialty hospitals, McLean (Psychiatry), Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and network, and Mass Eye and Ear (all Harvard teaching hospitals), community hospitals throughout Massachusetts and one in New Hampshire, multiple ambulatory sites, urgent care facilities, physician groups, an insurance company, home-based care, and long-term care services. The system is recognized today as one of the world’s most renowned health systems. MGB is a non-profit organization, deeply committed to its four-part mission of patient care, research, teaching, and service to the community.
To support clinical integration, MGB is unifying its academic Departments across MGH and BWH. Each integrated clinical department will be led by a single chair, representing a significant shift toward improving patient outcomes, safety, quality, and operational efficiency. The Department of Dermatology will be one of the latest departments to combine under one Department Chair. The Departments of Dermatology at MGH and BWH are distinguished by their outstanding reputation in patient care, education, and research. Each is considered one of the very top departments in the country. The combined legacy departments represent a combined portfolio of clinical specialties and services with more than 100 appointed faculty, 30 residents, and 10 clinical fellows. BWH and MGH clinical volumes for FY23 encompassed more than 317,000 patient visits and procedures. Research activities in the two departments continue to grow, with ~$72.2M in total research funding in FY23. Each department is among the most productive in the country in terms of grant support, published manuscripts, and academic mentorship. The Chair of Dermatology is charged with leadership responsibilities in integrating and advancing the clinical, educational, and research activities within MGH, BWH, and across MGB. The inaugural MGB Chair will serve as a role model for scientists and clinicians in training, which will require an outstanding clinical dermatologist and investigator who is a distinguished national leader in dermatology as well as an exemplary teacher, leader, communicator, and administrator. The Chair of Dermatology will report to MGB’s President of Academic Medical Centers. This leader will be based in Boston, Massachusetts; relocation is required for this leadership role.
MGB seeks an accomplished physician and leader who brings prior administrative and management experience, proven leadership skills, and must be capable of integrating and administering two large and complex clinical, research, and academic departments, each with its own unique characteristics. The successful candidate will have distinguished academic credentials, including an MD or MD/PhD degree, and experience in research, training, and clinical achievement, commensurate with appointment to the faculty at the rank of Full Professor at Harvard Medical School.
