Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position in Child Behavioral Health. This position has a unique focus on working with Medicaid as a policy consultant to expand care and improve health outcomes in Nevada. This position also includes a clinical service component, a teaching component, and the opportunity to advance programmatic initiatives as described below.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate mission, vision and values alignment with UNR Med, Medicaid, and Renown Health. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to communicate across a spectrum of health literacy levels to a variety of audiences, build relationships with institutions such as Federally Qualified Health Centers and managed care centers, work collaboratively in a team including UNR Med, Renown Health, Medicaid and community stakeholders, and proactively build and improve programs or projects to expand access to clinical care and education will be pivotal to success in the role. Additionally, it is preferred that candidates have had first-hand experience treating individuals with Medicaid insurance.

Preferred experience in this role includes providing care fir youth with Medicaid in outpatient behavioral health, in home, or community-based services. Experience is desired of serving patient populations with specific needs such as youth with co-occurring developmental needs, those involved in foster care, those with substance abuse challenges and/or those that have intersected with the criminal justice system. Trauma informed care, including clinical best practices relating to CBT and DBT will contribute to success in the role.

Duties and Responsibilities

Medicaid

• Serve as a clinical expert and advisor on child and adolescent psychiatry to state Medicaid officials in support of improving outcomes for children with serious emotional and behavioral health challenges in Nevada;
• Attend and actively participate in regular meetings with state Medicaid officials and stakeholders as a subject matter expert and clinical program advisor on the unique needs of Nevadan children with behavioral health needs and the needs of their families and caregivers;
• Recommend suggested program changes and help develop strategies enact changes in consultation to state Medicaid officials that can be used to attract and retain a qualified health care workforce for meeting the needs of children with serious behavioral health challenges, statewide;
• Serve on any state advisory boards, committees, and workgroups, when needed, as a representative of the university in support of the state's efforts to improve outcomes for children in Nevada with unmet behavioral health needs;
• Conduct academic research and literature reviews and draft summaries of research findings in support of improving the quality of care for children with behavioral health needs;
• Provide clinical-based reviews and policy recommendations for the state's efforts to increase access to community-based treatment, therapies, and related services for children with behavioral health needs with the goal of reducing the need for residential or institutional placement of this child population;
• Review proposed and current Medicaid benefit coverage, payment and utilization management policies and make clinical-based recommendations that will improve outcomes for children with behavioral health needs;
• Provide expert guidance to state Medicaid officials on the appropriate standards of care and clinical needs for children with behavioral health needs in the development of new programs and policies at Medicaid;
• Develop and host trainings for other health care providers and stakeholders on best practices for providing care to children with behavioral health needs in Nevada and support Medicaid's efforts to engage providers in utilizing a statewide standardized screening and assessment tool for determining the appropriate course of therapy or treatment for a child; and
• Serve as a clinical expert advisor to state Medicaid officials in the review of certain appeals by recipients or providers in response to state denials for payment or coverage, where the core issue in the appeal presents complex clinical questions and requires the medical knowledge of a physician.
• Coordinate with key staff at state-contracted managed care plans, like the behavioral health medical officers, as requested by the state, for children's behavioral health priority projects.

Evidence Based Education and Training

• Psychiatry training and education for current medical students, residents, fellows and other health professions students at UNR Med and other health professions schools, including potential Interprofessional Education (IPE) opportunities

Outpatient Youth Behavioral Health Clinical Care

• Deliver patient care as a youth behavioral health provider to increase access for Medicaid patients.

Required Qualifications

• MD, DO or equivalent
• ABPN Board Certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
• ABPN Board Certification in Psychiatry

OR

• Psychologist licensed (or eligible for licensure) in the State of Nevada

Compensation Grade

Academic appointment commensurate with experience

Total Compensation

The total compensation package includes a competitive salary, moving allowance (if applicable), a rich retirement plan, health insurance options that include dental and vision, life insurance, thirty (30) days of sick leave provided upon start date and two (2) days of sick leave accrued per full month after the first year of service, two (2) days of annual leave accrued each full month, along with many other benefits.
