Overview
Collects and prepares blood specimens for laboratory testing, represents the laboratory to patients and their families. Reviews physician orders, obtains clinical and demographic information, prints draw lists, and verifies patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested.
Responsibilities
Perform phlebotomy procedures, including venipuncture, micro collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, and therapeutic phlebotomy.
Collect and process Blood Bank specimens accurately.
Ensure proper patient identification at all times.
Prioritize phlebotomy duties to maintain efficiency and meet workload demands.
Adapt to changes in work schedules and volumes as necessary.
Utilize downtime effectively to support departmental needs.
Answer phone calls, schedule tests, provide accurate information, and respond to STAT draw requests promptly.
Direct calls efficiently to the appropriate person or department.
Enter patient information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS).
Register patients into HIS, ensuring all demographics and insurance information is updated.
Order test information, print labels, and label specimens at the point of service.
Maintain and organize phlebotomy equipment and supplies inventory.
Ensure the patient drawing area is clean and organized.
Maintain phlebotomy baskets/carts and follow safety protocols.
Understand the role of Phlebotomist-Registrar in supporting laboratory functions, patient care, customer service, and healthcare business operations.
Adhere to biohazard safety protocols, including the use of the pneumatic tube system and proper disposal of blood collection equipment.
Change gloves between patients and maintain safety standards.
Demonstrate professionalism, bedside manner, and positive attitude toward patients.
Perform medical necessity checks for outpatient phlebotomy.
Ensure specimens are properly packaged and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner.
Serve as a resource for new employees, providing training and support.
Qualifications
Will consider entry level graduates. Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees and the public. Able to work under pressure. Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions. Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem solving.
Phlebotomy certification within 1 year.
