Summary:

This individual serves as a dual role representative for the Patient Experience Department, functioning both as a Language Coordinator and a Patient Experience Advisor. As a Language Coordinator, facilities communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals within medical settings and utilizes American Sign Language or other manual sign systems. This individual acts as a liaison between patients with a language of origin other than English, and our deaf or hard of hearing patients and medical staff, ensures effective communication and understanding. Additionally, as a Patient Experience Advisor, collaborates with leaders, providers, and staff to identify and implement improvement activities aimed at enhancing patient and staff experience. This involves facilitates coaching and learning interventions to address patient experience issues and acts as a neutral party in sensitive care concerns, demonstrates active listening, trust-building, and professionalism towards all involved parties.

Responsibilities:

Provides sign language interpreter services as requested, ensuring effective communication for deaf or hard of hearing patients, family members, and staff.

Interprets discussions, announcements, meetings, and other spoken word situations using American Sign Language or other manual sign systems tailored to the language and cultural background of individuals and coordinates interpreter accommodations for both deaf and hard of hearing and blind or low vision patients.

Oversees language services and maintains comprehensive documentation of all engagements within the YRMC internal language service system and ensures adherence to YRMC policies and procedures in compliance with Section 504 and ADA regulations.

Collaborates with various departments to grasp relevant concepts, enhancing translation accuracy for deaf or hard of hearing individuals and staff and travels to different YRMC locations to meet communication needs effectively.

Assists in the creation, production, and training of educational materials for support services. Stays abreast of best practices, emerging trends, and legislative updates related to sign language interpreting services and participates in systematic reviews and evaluations of sign language interpreting functionality, contributing to improvement action plans based on assessments and data.

Analyzes a wide array of patient experience data, including quantitative and qualitative feedback from sources such as surveys, advisory councils, and direct observations, to develop recommendations for enhancing metrics and improving the patient experience.

Demonstrates expertise in evidence-based principles and practices of patient and customer experience, providing educational and coaching opportunities for staff.

Maintains a deep understanding of Yuma Regional Medical Center's patient experience strategy and stays informed on industry best practices, ensuring effective implementation to enhance patient care.

Observes staff, provider, and patient interactions across diverse clinical and nonclinical settings and delivers patient-centered coaching recommendations based on best practices, utilizing effective communication methods.

Addresses patient concerns and grievances promptly, employing effective service recovery methods to facilitate resolution. Acts as a valuable resource for the healthcare team and champions patient experience initiatives.

Exercises sound judgment, prioritization, problem-solving, and decision-making skills. Acts as a valuable resource for the healthcare team and champions patient experience initiatives.

Provides technical support to hospital leadership in analyzing and interpreting patient experience metrics, utilizing data to establish local improvement goals and plans.

Minimum Requirement:

• BACHELOR'S DEGREE
• American Sign Language (ASL) certification, through State Board for Evaluation of Interpreters
• (BEI) or National Registry Interpreter for the Deaf (RID).
• Bilingual in English-Spanish
• Certified Medical Interpreter Certification within the first 6 months of employment.

Preferred/Optional: Master's degree in related field.
