Must obtain Perioperative Blood Management Technologist Certification issued by IBBM within 12 months of hire or transfer.

Note: The Circulatory Support Specialist assists perfusionists and primarily works in cardiac operating rooms and assists the perfusionists during various types of cardiac surgical procedures by performing ancillary perfusion tasks (setting up equipment, managing inventory, cleaning equipment and managing department databases etc.,)
The core responsibility of an perfusion tech, perioperative blood management techs, perfusion assistants, autotransfusion technician's job is setting up, operating and monitoring cell saver equipment before, during or after surgery. Perfusion services are provided to patients who are having open heart surgery or other medical procedures that involve the heart-lung machine.
JOB SUMMARY
The Circulatory Support Specialist 2 assists perfusionists with routine and complex procedures before, during and after cardiovascular surgical procedures. Provides autologous blood recovery services, prepares devices per protocols; ensures devices are working properly at completion of cases and duration of patient's need. Accompanies patients being transported within hospital to ensure that an assist device is functioning properly. Answers and provides troubleshooting for questions and concerns regarding mechanical devices.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
Provides autologous blood recovery and biologic therapy as required and may assist Perfusionists in the assembly, operation and monitoring of auto-transfusion.
Assists with set up of cardiopulmonary equipment and provides VAD equipment and performs non-sterile aspects of back table preparation of mechanical assist device intraoperative.
Monitors circulatory assist device and patient while transporting patients to various hospital areas such as OR, radiology, physical therapy (other than ECMO).
Provides and performs all aspects of circulatory support machinery maintenance, inventory, repair, and cleaning prior to procedures. Reports any major issues to Biomedical Engineering.
Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; helps department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Perfusion and/or designee.
Maintains optimal communication, close cooperation, and consultation with Perfusionists and Physicians during delivery of services.
Maintains appropriate, timely, and accurate documentation including pre-procedure checklist and filing of all records.
Accountable for completion of quality assurance protocols as established by the perioperative blood management program.
Implements specific regulatory requirements associated with services provided.
Accountable for adherence to the BSW Health System and affiliates, Hospital's policy outlining the care, maintenance, culturing, documentation, and reporting related to the equipment used by the perfusion department.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
One year of related hospital perfusion services or related manufacturer experience, and/or demonstrates equivalent proficiencies. Operating room experience preferred.
General computer skills using Word, Excel, Electronic medical documentation, etc.
Knowledge of blood recovery and biologic processing devices.
Educational or work history in clinical bio-engineering, circulatory support, perfusionist or EMT preferred.
Experience as a Circulatory Support Specialist preferred.
Associates Degree in Health Science preferred.
Knowledge of sterile processing, cleaning, and disinfecting patient care equipment, and appropriate documentation of these tasks.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE/REGISTRATION
Basic Life Support (BLS): BLS within 30 days.
Periop Blood Mgmt Technolgist (PBMT): Must obtain Perioperative Blood Management Technologist Certification issued by IBBM within 12 months of hire or transfer.
