GENERAL SUMMARY: The Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant II perform various Blood Center processes and procedures in assigned areas which may include blood donor collection and/or blood component processing, transport, and distribution in the AH Blood Center or Bloodmobile. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the duties and responsibilities performed within this classification. It is not necessarily descriptive of any one position in the class. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position. · Registers blood donors for blood or component collection and explains the screening process, the health screening tests performed, the appointment system, donor eligibility timeframe, proper nutrition, and any other information pertinent to the donor. · Ensures completion of donor questionnaire and performs donor physical process; determines donor eligibility based on the results, either obtains consent to donate or defers donor per Blood Center protocol. Accurately identifies donors in every step of the donation process. · Performs phlebotomy and collects blood products and samples from donors manually or using automated instrumentation (apheresis) upon completion of training; provides post-donation care and maintains alertness to any reaction by donors and assists with reactions or notifies appropriate staff. · Assures proper storage of blood products and samples during collection operations and ensures proper labeling of blood products and samples and accompanying forms; investigates any discrepancies. · Actively assists in recruitment (phone or on-site), encourages additional donations and rescheduling of donors; converts donors to automated technology (apheresis) when appropriate. · Constructs and deconstructs mobile collections equipment for the bloodmobile; provides support and assists in the safe operation of the bloodmobile as a passenger and/or driver. · Receives, prepares/processes, stores, and/or distributes blood products and samples and ensures accompanying testing forms are labeled properly and acceptable for testing; investigates related donor specimen or paperwork problems. · Prepares or modifies blood products per Blood Center protocol, organizes and ships blood samples to the reference Donor Testing lab, and labels and validates products upon completion of donor testing. · Load automated analyzers and perform waived testing after completion of training; operate, maintain, and perform quality control checks on equipment. · Meets the quality and quantity production and distribution goals established by the department. Prioritizes workload to meet production and customer requirements. · Performs data entry and operates the computer programs associated with donor registration, donor collection, component production, labeling, storage, and shipping; and has a thorough knowledge of downtime procedures. · Maintain accurate, legible, and complete collection, processing, and distribution of department records; keeping donor information confidential at all times. · Performs good inventory management practices throughout the blood component collecting, preparing, and shipping process; maintains accurate electronic and physical inventory locations for products/samples. · Ensures products/samples are suitable for release for distribution and are managed appropriately. Identifies and quarantines products/samples that do not meet quality requirements. Performs disposition of unacceptable products/samples. · Maintains, monitors, and restocks inventory or donor/laboratory supplies and orders replacements as needed; keeps workspaces neat and organized by cleaning and disinfecting selected or assigned laboratory equipment. · Monitors and records temperatures on designated refrigerators and freezers daily and confirms that temperature remains within acceptable limits. Notify the supervisor of deviations immediately. · Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulatory standards to ensure the accuracy, potency, proper identity, and safety of all blood products. · Performs various support activities or duties as assigned to facilitate the operation of the department or work area, which include answering the telephone, and clerical and receptionist duties (i.e., faxing, phones, reports) to ensure the smooth operation of the department or unit. · Supports and helps in education to new and existing clinical staff. This includes mentoring students from affiliated schools or programs. · Participates in, and knows, laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of new equipment and/or procedures or methods. · Follows appropriate safety policies including the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling. Demonstrates understanding and adheres to the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies. Employee job duties may include the transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; the employee will be required to complete initial training (before handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment. · Performs all departmental functions and has a thorough knowledge of hospital and Laboratory Information Systems including downtime procedures, specimen processing, batching and transporting, billing, reference testing, and scheduling. · Adheres to Advent Health’s Corporate Responsibility Plan and all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; always protects the confidentiality of patient information and results. May be required to look up and print sensitive results and issue them to patients and/or family members.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS PREFERRED:
•Medical Terminology
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
·High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
·3 or more years’ experience in a donor center
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:
·Completion of Blood Collection Program, Medical Lab Assistant Program, or similar training program appropriate to anticipated department assignment.
·Current students seeking higher educational degree or certification in a science field such as nursing, medical technology, pre-med, or related field may be substituted for the 1-year hospital experience.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
·Valid FL Driver’s license
·Basic Life Support (BLS) certification if required by the facility.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:
·National Certification in Phlebotomy if phlebotomy duties are required.
·National Certification as a Medical Lab Assistant
