Occupational Summary
Participate in specialized and complex technical tasks involved in screening & evaluating slides of cytologic specimens (gynecologic, non-gynecologic & FNA) for the detection of cancer and/or otherpathologic conditions.
Work Performed
May perform any or all of the following duties: Evaluate gynecologic & /or non-gynecologic slides for the presence or absence of disease. Provide differential diagnoses & discuss cytologic criteria. Accurately record diagnoses on the computer. Submit appropriate slides to the pathologist for review. Review patient history related to diagnoses. Review specimen requisition/slide for completeness & accuracy of labeling Review individual monthly statistics with manager on a semi-annual basis. Participate in semi-annual CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) diagnostic review with manager & medical director. Recognize cytologic (diagnostic /preparatory) issues of concern & address with appropriate CT staff member. Help in the cytology preparation area as necessary. Regularly participate in CE activities Identify cases for educational resources & share them with the Teaching Coordinator. Participate in workshops, scientific papers, & posters18BX15. Mentor cytotechnology students (> 2 years screening experience). 10% QC (Quality Control) & 5-year look back re-screen. (CLIA required >/=5 years). FNA Coverage (>/= 1 year's screening experience FNA/Non-Gynecologic specimens) to include: review clinical histories of patients for procedures, prepare FNA samples, perf orm immediate adequacy assessments& triage for ancillary studies.

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Bachelor of Science degree in cytology or related field or a Bachelor of Arts degree with 24 semester hours of required science coursework. Successful completion of a CAHEA accredited cytology program. Masters preferred. Minimal educational or experience requirements may be modified on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment) director if minimal CLIA requirements are met by the employee for the tasks being performed.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
BS/BA CT(ASCP) certification or eligible or equivalent. Passing the board certification examination is a condition of continued employment.
