The Medical Assistant, Certified functions as an integral member of theinterdisciplinary healthcare team in providing directpatient care. TheMedical Assistant, Certified perfor msroutine administrative and patientcare supportive duties in a Health S ystem medical practice that assistmedical and/or nursing staff in the ex amination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.
Clinical responsibilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explainstreatment procedures to patients, and prepares patients for examinationsand proced ures.Patient care support responsibilities may include assisting the med icaland nursing staff during examination and procedures, collecting andp reparing laboratoryspecimens, performing basic laboratory test in thecli nic/office, takingelectrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staples,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyunderstandin g of the educational content and his/her involvement in theplan of care, and documenting in the patientrecord.Other clinical support responsibil ities include disposing ofcontaminatedsupplies, instrument processing, high level disinfectionand sterilization of medical instruments, telepho ning prescriptions to apharmacy, preparing and administering medications as directed by aphysician, and authorizing drug refills as directed. Pe rforms otherclinical functionsas delegated and supervised by the physici an.Administrative responsibilities:The CMA greets patients, answers tele phones, schedules appointments toinclude arrive appointments in MaestroC are, checkout patients, andreferral scheduling; arranges for hospital ad missions and laboratoryservices, updates and files patient medical recor ds, fills out insuranceforms,handles billing, bookkeeping to include rec eiving copays andcollectionson account balances; correspondence, and ord ering clinicaland clericalsupplies and forms. Performs other administrat ive duties asJointCommission and falls and/or participate in clinic comm ittees.
Good customer ser vice skills.Work requiresthe ability to understand and follow oral and w ritteninstructions generally acquired through a high school education an dmedicalassistant programming.Heavy lifting and the ability to transport stretcher and wheelchairpatients may be required.Working knowledge of s teriletechniques and special procedures that areapplicable to work perfo rmed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administ eringroutine and specialtreatments to patients.Working knowledge of sani tation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precautions applicab le for workin a clinicsetting. Minimum Qualifications
Education
Level I -- Graduation from accredited Medical Assistant program strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level II -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level III -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required. Level IV -- Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) strongly preferred. High school or GED graduation required.
Experience
Level I -- No experience required. Level II -- 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Level III --2 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Level IV -- 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting. Note: 1 year of experience will be provided for an Associate degree in Medical Assisting. General Ladder Statement: In addition to the education and experience noted, applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document for Levels II, III, and IV.
