The Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS) is the largest within the VISN-21 Network. The main academic affiliate is UC Davis. Our location affords the extraordinary amenities of the Northern California region including first-rate schools, numerous cultural offerings, and outdoor activities, with easy access to the coast and mountains.
VANCHCS currently supports a One Year General Practice Residency Program for six dental residents. Three dental residents have clinical activity at the McClellan Dental Clinic in the Sacramento area, and three residents have clinical activity at the Mare Island Dental Clinic in Vallejo. It is anticipated that the residency program will expand to Fairfield, California and to other remote locations in Northern California in the future.
Duties:
VA Northern California Health Care System is recruiting a full-time General Practice Residency Director - Staff Dentist with the position located at the Mare Island VA Dental Clinic. The position reports to the Chief of Dental Service. The General Practice Residency Director / Staff Dentist is expected to have expertise and competency to perform scope of practice defined through the medical center credentialing and privileging process. Clinical duties (70%) will include providing dental services within the full scope of general dentistry, or ADA recognized dental specialty. Administrative duties (30%) will include ensuring compliance with all aspects for the accredited General Practice Residency Program for residents across two or more sites, all VHA Handbooks and Directives, all VISN Policies, all Medical Center Memorandum and Policies, and Service Policies and Procedures pertinent to dental clinic management.
The individual is expected to have the knowledge, skills, and experience to achieve:
- Development and implementation of the curriculum plan.
- On going evaluation of program content, faculty teaching, and resident performance.
- Evaluation of resident training and supervision in affiliated institutions and off services rotations.
- Maintenance of records related to the educational program and resident selection.
- Oversee resident selection, match program, and PASS and MATCH.
- Devote sufficient time to accomplish the assigned duties and responsibilities.
- The Director will hold responsibilities in teaching, clinical practice, foster research opportunities, and all aspects of program administration.
- Ensure residents practice evidence-based, high-quality dentistry.
- Teach trainees in the clinical and classroom setting- prepare lectures, invite guest lectures.
- Evaluate appropriateness of patients to be seen in the resident clinic, ensure appropriate resident case selection.
- Maintain an active dialogue with VA referring providers and continuity of care, ensure patients seen for recall exam by referring provider.
- Participate in quality assurance programs and continuing education.
- Provide residents feedback and coaching as indicated.
- Work with community and local educational resources to sustain and expand resident opportunity.
- Facilitate resident participation in multidisciplinary treatment planning and implant board.
- Monitor resident productivity.
- Work with HR to ensure recruitment activity for residency program is sustained. Ensure compensation remains in alignment with local programs.
- Actively participate in local and national residency director and education meetings and forums. Attend the National Residency Directors meetings and tele-conferences. Attend Allied Health and Medical Education Quarterly Meeting.
- Ensure residents provider after hours dental emergency consultation services and are aware when to refer patients for higher care and when to consult with attending staff dental provider. Ensure residents are aware of process to prescribe medications after hours to local pharmacies.
- Ensure collaboration and communication with in-patient setting for dental examination and indicated care.
Minimum Qualifications: You must have had completed a GPR or AEGD and also one year of supervising a residency or AEGD program.
Preferred Competencies/Experience: In depth practical knowledge of all VA scheduling packages and ambulatory data capture applications, other non-related packages interfacing with the ambulatory data capture program (lab, radiology, surgery, event capture, TIU, etc.), records management, and other applications pertinent to outpatient clinic profile management and data collection.
Ability to work independently.
Ability to effectively multi-task with multiple departments and assignments
Tour of Duty: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday
