Director Surgical Services is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the full spectrum of surgical patient care for Baylor Scott and White Health (BSWH), which includes all clinical and nursing care in surgery preparation units, operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units, telemetry units, outpatient surgery suites, or other patient holding/receiving surgical areas. Directs, organizes, and evaluates all patient care services provided in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative surgical areas in BSWH hospitals, clinics, or ambulatory care facilities. May direct and coordinate a variety of clinical duties, including cleanliness and safety of surgical environments, control of medications, preparation and post-care of surgical patients, and management of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Establishes and communicates the clinical goals and objectives for assigned surgical units or area of responsibility in accordance with the BSWH overall patient care goals and objectives. Develops and implements surgical services policies, procedures, and practices to ensure high quality surgical outcomes and improve surgical patient experience. Maintains and monitors clinical operational efficiency, standards of care, and patient service delivery levels. Negotiates interdepartmental resources and communicates with other BSWH clinical departments to ensure effective and efficient delivery of surgical care.

Leads and advises subordinate(s) to meet schedules, resolve technical problems, and monitor performance. Has a larger, more complex organization or functional area than a manager. Often has one or more managers or supervisors reporting to the role.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE
1. Directs nursing surgical services for assigned area of responsibility for BSWH.
2. Recommends and implements strategic and operational plans and priorities for surgical services aligned with BSWH overall business objectives.
3. Develops and implements surgical services policies, procedures, and practices for assigned areas of responsibility.
4. Monitors surgical units and takes corrective action to ensure safe and quality patient care.
5. Prepares various departmental dashboards and reporting for senior leadership review, such as surgical procedure types, amount of time per case, call backs, and other procedure statistics.
6. Ensures adherence to quality assurance and best practices in accordance with BSWH standards.
7. Leads and coordinates operating room scheduling with appropriate teams, including anesthesia, physicians, and other nursing.
8. Evaluates and selects products to be used in operating room by using products or comparing information and prices.
9. Collaborates with supply chain to select and procure supplies, obtaining highest quality for lowest price.
10. Leads and monitors all sterilization procedures to ensure proper methods, packaging, labeling, record-keeping, distribution, storage, and recall of unsterile and outdated supplies.
KEY SUCCESS FACTORS
1. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field required. Master's degree preferred.
2. 3+ years of nursing experience in an acute care environment.
3. Experience in a leadership role preferred.
4. Registered Nurse (RN) license.
5. Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
6. Experience collaborating across multiple departments and clinical disciplines within a large, complex healthcare organization preferred.
7. Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
8. Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
