The RN Poison Information Specialist works under general supervision, provides phone consultation and education to consumers and health care professionals regarding human and animal exposures to known & unknown medications, chemicals and other substances.
Essential Functions:
Assessment: ? Asks direct questions to elicit information in order to assess patient?s status. ? Obtains history of poisoning event including answers to who, what, when, where, how, and other relevant factors. ? Follows basic poison management procedures and assess the case for home observation/treatment or referral to health care facility. (30%)
Recommendations: ? Provides first aid, poison prevention and basic treatment recommendations to the general public in easily understandable terms. ? Provides clear understandable treatment recommendations to health care providers after demonstrating competency and when cleared to do so by supervisor. ? Provides follow up calls for patient status, evaluates medical outcome. ? Provides support and guidance with firm directions given in step-by-step order in a calm manner. ? Manage and maintain queue awareness. ? Refers cases to Poison Information Specialist or Certified Poison Information Specialist CSPI for assessment and/or management per established guidelines. ? Performs basic mathematical calculations to determine mg/kg of ingested drugs/chemicals, calculates levels of toxicity and potential blood levels. (30%)
Quality: ? Collects demographic and other information to generate statistics on calls. ? Documents notes in a clear and easily understood style. ? Cases pass routine and other quality reviews including chart and tape audits and peer review. (20%)
PHES:Provides information to the Public utilizing FAQ?s.Records all FAQ?s in charts.Completes all required surveys. (20%)
Education:
Associate's Degree Required
Work Experience:
less than 1 year six months or more experience in medical call center, public health or other medical setting. Required
Licenses:
RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Basic computer knowledge/skills.
Good verbal and oral communication skills- fast and correct typing at 30 WPM, ability to create grammatically correct responses without any spelling errors.
Ability to comprehend, capture as well as interpret basic customer information.
Ability to treat people with respect under all circumstances, instill trust in others besides upholding the values of the organization.
Ability to manage difficult customer situations, to respond promptly to the needs of the customer, solicit feedback to improve service, respond to requests for service/assistance.
