The Lactation Specialist works under the direct supervision of the WIC Manager who is a degreed nutritionist. Works in collaboration with the WIC Manager to coordinate Breastfeeding Promotion for the WIC Clinics. Supports and promotes breastfeeding of infants, provides consultation for mothers experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding. Will assist in implementing the Peer Counselor program through mentoring and provision of education and training. Must have an excellent working knowledge of WIC Policies and Procedures. Must be able to provide coverage for certifications as volumes dictate. Must be able to make practical application of WIC Program policies to meet everyday demands. Must work independently; use initiative, creativity and discretion in handling day-to-day activities. Must have excellent knowledge of breastfeeding principles/techniques and will be expected to stay updated through continuing education activities.

Responsibilities:
Identify educational needs of breastfeeding mothers who are participants in the WIC program.
Provides direct instruction and consultation in breastfeeding and breast health to the targeted population.
Provides breastfeeding support services by phone or by appointment as needed to both WIC participants.
In collaboration with the WIC Manager, evaluates effectiveness of staff development programs in relation to program goals/objectives as well as the effectiveness of the lactation education to patients (E).
In collaboration with the WIC Manager, works to develop the WIC Peer Counselor Program through mentoring and provision of education and training. Organizes, directs, and conducts educational programs for staff and patients in the area of lactation (E).
Acts as the Lactation Liaison with the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children?s Hospital.
Works to support the daily staffing needs of the WIC Clinic by providing support for Certifications and provision of other services as needed.
Demonstrates competence to perform assigned responsibilities in a manner that meets the age specific and developmental needs of clients.
Appropriately adapts assigned assessment, treatment, and/or service methods to accommodate the unique physical psychosocial cultural spiritual age specific and other developmental needs of clients served.
Shares expertise with educational resources and the nurse managers in planning, implanting and evaluating CSRHC wide educational programs.
Serves as a resource for staff developing educational programs and resources.

Requirements:
Education:
High School diploma or GED required.
Completion of a Lactation Certification Educational Program.
Experience:
3 years of experience in breastfeeding education
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
Lactation Consultant Certification. (CLC or IBCLC)
