Thomas Jefferson University seeks a transformative and collaborative academic physician leader to serve as the Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.
The Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine is a large and varied academic department dedicated to carrying out the mission of Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and the Jefferson Health Care Network. We proudly sponsor a fully accredited residency training program, fellowship programs, as well as educational programs for medical students. In addition, we offer a nationally recognized CME program each year. On the central campus alone, the department has 60 Faculty Anesthesiologists, 65 CRNAs and 55 residents. This campus hosts 4 surgical facilities providing 31,000 surgical anesthetics and 25,000 endoscopy anesthetics annually. In addition, the central department supports 3,000 deliveries annually.
The Department Executive Vice Chair will lead a diverse and dynamic group of physicians, residents, and CRNA’s through sound principals and open communication. The successful candidate will need to exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve the developmental goals. This pivotal role is essential for advancing the department's clinical and academic missions, focusing on enhancing patient care, and overseeing clinical and faculty affairs related to recruitment and retention. The Executive Vice Chair will play a critical role in shaping the department's strategic direction. Responsibilities include ensuring the highest standards of patient care, fostering a collaborative and innovative clinical environment, and integrating clinical practices with academic goals. The successful candidate will work closely with other department leaders to create a supportive and inclusive environment that promotes excellence in education, research, and clinical practice.
The successful candidate will have:
Education Requirements:
MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
Board certification in a relevant clinical specialty.
In possession of/eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Experience Requirements:
At least 5 years of leadership experience in clinical operations within a Department of Anesthesiology, ideally gained within a large academic health system.
A strong record of teaching, program administration, facilitating research, and cultivating academic-clinical collaborations.
A demonstrated commitment to supporting the growth, development, mentorship, and well-being of faculty, clinicians, and students.
An academic career trajectory with increasing levels of administrative responsibilities, ideally culminating in serving as a Vice-Chair, or Division Director for a department of anesthesiology.
Experience with the operational and financial management of administering a department, including prior responsibilities for budget management, strategic planning, and resource management.
Academic accomplishments which merit appointment at the rank of associate or full professor at Sidney Kimmel Medical College.
Experience with, and knowledge of, state-of-the-art information technology, patient care delivery systems, current staffing models, patient safety issues, work force planning, productivity standards, case management, operating room performance measures, and service line development.
Proven track record in the successful navigation of organizational dynamics, and in change leadership.
Commitment to customer service advocacy and championing.
An effective strategist who can translate organizational vision into the identification and achievement of operational goals and objectives.
Persuasive, with strong collaborative leadership skills, as demonstrated through success in achieving improved outcomes in prior positions.
Ability to galvanize diverse perspectives and priorities towards a shared vision for Je?erson Health’s Anesthesiology & Perioperative Services.
Experience in a large, complex, matrixed organization with shared leadership roles and decision-making processes.Possesses an enterprising mindset and a commitment to entrepreneurial endeavors. Is motivated by connecting and building networks in pursuit of new business opportunities and alternative business solutions.
Demonstrates a commitment to innovation motivated by an inherent desire to always improve upon, create greater efficiency, and achieve economies of scale.
