POSITION SUMMARY The Optometrist examines eyes and visual system; administers sight tests; diagnoses problems or impairments, manages, and treats visual problems, conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. Prescribes and fits corrective glasses or contact lenses. To do this involves the use of specialist equipment. The incumbent also recommends other treatments or visual aids where appropriate or refers cases to medical practitioners as necessary. May prescribe therapeutic drugs to treat specific eye conditions.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Examines the eyes of patients of various ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality and defects in vision; 2. Checks for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (for example diabetes}; 3. Communicates with patients to get detailed case histories; 4. Uses specialist electronic equipment for diagnosis and testing; 5. Writes prescriptions for glasses, contact lenses and other optical appliances; 6. Fits and checks prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects; 7. Offers advice and reassurance about matters related to vision; 8. Offers help and advice for patients choosing frames and lenses; 9. Writes referral notices to doctors; 10. Assists with the creation of monthly reports for Wexford Health for submission to WVDCR; 12. Undertakes training and continuous professional development in order to keep up to date with the latest techniques.
JOB REQUIREMENTS The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted. LICENSURE: Current unrestricted West Virginia Optometry license CERTIFICATION: Current CPR Certification EDUCATION: Graduate from an accredited school of Optometry PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience preferred; correctional experience preferred.
