The Indiana University School of Medicine’s Acute Care Surgery Division and IU Health Physicians are actively seeking a highly qualified surgeon with fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery. The Medical Director reflects the mission, vision and values of the Adult Academic Health Center, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work within a leading academic hospital and quaternary care center in the state of Indiana and region. Institutional Highlights: Slated for the 4th Quarter of 2027, a new $4.3 billion dollar Indiana University Health Hospital and Academic Health Center will be opening. The hospital will have the flexibility to accommodate 864 beds with roughly 1/3 of inpatient beds dedicated to critical care, with others designed to adjust up or down based on the needs of the patient. The Medical Education and Research Building will be equipped with the classrooms, labs, technology, and expertise to uncover answers to medicines most challenging problems. Our overarching goal is to improve the health of Indiana residents, to train new generations of physicians, and to use research to revolutionize care.
Responsibilities: Provide Acute Care Surgery services (trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care) in various settings including the ED, OR, ICU, floor, and clinic. Engage in teaching and mentoring students, residents and fellows in all aspects of acute care surgery Participate in clinical research opportunities within one of the largest medical schools in the country. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care including 25+ Acute Care Surgery APP’s.
Responsibilities Medical Director, Surgical Critical Care: Responsible for developing policies, protocols in the SICU Lead surgery specific education for unit staff members Lead all critical care expansion activities within the department of surgery Represents department on all critical care committees in the AHC Site Director of the ACGME-approved fellowship in surgical critical care at IU Methodist Hospital Develop a critical care research agenda Education for residents and fellows Report directly to the Chief of Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Attending responsibilities on critical care service, trauma service and acute care surgery Review all cases referred for peer review and monitor ICU quality measures followed by the hospital system and TQIP Participate in Trauma Center Reverification process
Qualifications: M.D., D.O. or equivalent education, Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care or Acute Care Surgery, Board certified/eligible in Surgical Critical Care Strong commitment to teaching, research, and clinical excellence. Must be knowledgeable about working with an adult population ranging from adolescent to geriatric, including patients with communications barriers, sensory impairment, and physical limitations, including but not limited to developmental, mobility, vision or hearing impairments
Preferred: >3 years’ experience at an academic institution Track record of scholarship, particularly in critical care Evidence of leadership training, ability, experience strongly desired Proficient in all ICU procedures, protocols and operations
