Under minimal supervision, designs, oversees, and manages all activities related to Infection Control and infection surveillance throughout Denver Health. For these activities, reports to the Infection Control Committee and the Medical Director of Infection Control and Prevention. Interacts with high level staff, including nursing directors, physician directors, executive staff, construction supervisors, et al., to trouble shoot infection control problems. Monitors and provides timely feedback of surveillance data related to the prevention of infections at Denver Health. Provides training throughout Denver Health and ensures that new employees' receive orientation in Infection Control. Continuously evaluates and updates policies, procedures, and practices relating to infection control within the institution. Is responsible for assuring compliance of Denver Health with the JCAHO standards on Infection Control. Assures compliance with state and federal regulations on Infection Control.
Essential Functions:
General Operations: * Utilizes methods, techniques and approaches to the delivery of care that are consistent with the age group of the patient and in conformance with the specific care plan developed for each patient, especially as applies to infectious diseases of children.* Analyzes laboratory information daily to identify patient concerns, set daily round priorities, and report to local and state public health department as appropriate.* Ensures appropriate information is entered into database for analysis, trending, and future reporting.* Coordinates and investigates potential outbreaks to ensure timely containment and identifies any breaks in practice. Advises hospital epidemiologist, Infection Control Committee, nursing managers, and other DH leaders on outbreak control.* Ensures that affected individuals are notified and that communicable disease exposure are reported to OHSC (employees) and to DH risk management (patients).* Reports communicable diseases in a timely manner to Denver Disease Control. (20%)
Development and Policy and Procedure Analysis* Develops, monitors, and analyzes performance improvement (PI) projects in Infection Control, working with appropriate Physician Director of Service and staff.* Reviews, revises, and updates Infection Control Policies and Procedures as necessary, working with the Infection Control Committee.* Facilitates yearly goal planning for DH Infection Control Program.* Reviews literature for best practice and benchmarking.* Develops and presents reports to the Infection Control Committee and revises & creates appropriate DH Infection Control reports for the Medical Staff Executive Committee.* Reviews all data for statistical validity, accuracy, and trends.* Develops appropriate charts and graphs to clearly report information.* Submits reports for Department of Medicine as scheduled (weekly, monthly, quarterly). (20%)
Collaboration* Facilitates channeling information between Occupational Health and Safety Clinic, Risk Management, Infection Control Committee, Bug Busters, the Safety Program, and the community.* Uses effective communication skills to explain and lead discussions about data/results to colleagues and supervisory staff.* Participates in/performs special projects as required. Assists in the development and implementation of tools needed for interventions. * Attends task force meetings and actively participates in decision-making, problem resolution, and overall process improvement.* Appropriately uses collaborative decision-making style of management that maximizes staff input and engagement.* Takes numerous phone calls daily to answer questions about infection control policies and procedures. (20%)
Talent Management* Serves as a liaison between DHMC and community agencies, answering questions or providing resources for information.* Consults with Infectious Disease MD regarding Infection Control issues.* Supports the Occupational Health and Safety Clinic by advising about and assistance in investigating employee infectious disease exposures.* Identifies training and staff development needs of employees and ensures appropriate training provided.* Recognizes positive behavior and contributions too the staff, using praise, appreciation and rewards.* Interviews and participates in the selection of staff. (20%)

Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing, Microbiology Technology, or Public Health. Required
Work Experience:
1-3 years Two years experience directly related to infection control and prevention. Required and
1-3 years Infection control experience in the healthcare setting. Required
Licenses:
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
CIC-Infection Prevention and Control Certification - APIC - Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology Required and
RN-Registered Nurse - DORA - Department of Regulatory Agencies Required and
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Good working knowledge of Microbiology and medical terminology.
Skilled in word processing, Excel, and Access databases.
Skilled in decision making regarding appropriateness of care review, assist with research design planning, and analyzing and generating quality improvement reports.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with other internal and external team members to ensure timelines are met.
