Lexington, Kentucky – The University of Kentucky (UK) College of Medicine invites nominations, inquiries, and applications for the position of Chair to lead the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences. Signature areas of research expertise in the department include diabetes and obesity, cardiovascular disease, brain aging and Alzheimer's disease, cancer, and substance use disorder. The next Chair will be an outstanding scientific leader who will have the ability to build upon an already stellar department and help lead a college-wide effort to impact pharmacology and nutritional challenges facing the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond.

The Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences is a unique department with highly productive, multidisciplinary faculty. The department has a history of being highly ranked for NIH funding according to the Blue Ridge Rankings. The Blue Ridge Institute also shows that faculty include principal investigators ranked among the top 10 in pharmacology departments nationwide. The Department runs two graduate programs: one in pharmacology and one in nutritional sciences. Faculty also contribute to teaching in the medical and dental curricula, other graduate programs, and have major roles in undergraduate education.

The College of Medicine is one of six health-related colleges at the University (Dentistry, Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health), encompassing a combined 25 basic science and clinical departments and more than 1,700 faculty members. In recent years, the college has expanded its educational efforts, adding two new regional campuses in Bowling Green and Northern Kentucky, and it continues to advance its research funding.

Reporting to the Dean of the UK College of Medicine, the Chair has responsibility for all faculty, learners, and staff in the department. They will be a visionary leader with a successful record of achievement in academic research in pharmacology and nutritional sciences or appropriately related fields. Exceptional accomplishments as an academician are also critical as the Chair's duties will include continuing their own research program as well as supervising and maintaining academic activities. The predominant criteria for appointment as Chair include a national reputation for research and the proven ability to mentor faculty while training future leaders in pharmacology and nutritional sciences.

The successful candidate should demonstrate strong leadership skills as a listener, decision-maker, humanist, and an effective advocate for the department and its faculty. The next Chair will have a background that includes experience developing collaborative initiatives and the personal characteristics needed to promote, foster, and facilitate the trust of colleagues and the broader University faculty. The successful applicant should demonstrate impeccable integrity and be an effective communicator. Prior extensive administrative experience as a department chair, vice chair, or director of graduate studies or equivalent is preferred.

A Ph.D. and/or M.D., or equivalent degree is required, in addition to a substantial track record of sustained scientific accomplishment and extramural funding, preferably relevant to the broad focus of the Department's areas of strengths. Administrative aptitude and a demonstrated commitment to academic and educational leadership are also important. Candidates should have sufficient experience to be a tenured full Professor.
