Overview
This individual is a clinically competent, registered Physician's Assistant who will report to the Chief of Surgery and Director of Surgical Services, has demonstrated either expertise in the management of urological patients, or whose training and/or prior experience indicates appropriate preparation to be trained in urological services. He/She effectively delivers care to the urologic patient throughout the continuum of care. The candidate's principal duties and responsibilities are to include but not limited to the following: Performing preoperative assessments, History and Physicals, education on counseling of patients as well as personal representatives regarding the patient's disease and health issues in an office or inpatient setting. The candidate will reach tentative diagnosis and order appropriate lab tests. The candidate will assist with surgical procedures in the OR under direct supervision of the surgeon. Candidate will initiate daily patient care management on nursing floors and document in daily progress notes. The individual will have the capacity to remove drains, place foley catheters and SP tubes and irrigate catheters.
Responsibilities
Demonstrates competency in performance of surgical asepsis including scrubbing, gowning, gloving and monitoring aseptic technique. Accepts personal accountability for proper handling, judicious use, and optimum care of all department supply, instrument, and equipment inventory. Performs preoperative assessments, History & Physicals, education on counseling of patients as well as Personal Representatives regarding patient's health issues. Initiates preoperative patient preparation to include order sets, consents and other documentation. Reaches tentative diagnosis and orders laboratory tests. Initiates daily patient care management on nursing floors, step-down units and documents in daily progress notes. Assists urologic surgeon in operating room procedures when requested. Initiate appropriate intraoperative behaviors unique to first assisting: handle all variety of tissue appropriately to reduce potential for injury or compromised blood supply; suture skillfully all varieties of tissue with the appropriate suture materials and suturing techniques. Effectively demonstrates critical thinking, prioritization of duties and time management skills throughout the perioperative area. Assists with the interview process of other PAs. Responsible for training and evaluation of these individuals. Attends departmental in-service meetings, conducts in-services and provides education/training to those who will benefit from their expertise. Initiate appropriate intraoperative behaviors unique to first assisting: provide hemostasis to reduce potential for fluid volume deficit by clamping and/or ligating vessels using ESU, direct pressure, applying chemical agents that promote coagulation and other means as directed by the surgeon; provide exposure of the operative site through appropriate use of retractors, other instruments, and through suctioning and sponging; use surgical instruments skillfully in ways consistent with their design and purpose as directed by the surgeon. Performs the usual evaluation and management procedures expected in the outpatient office setting. May prescribe appropriate prescription medications. As needed will refer patients to urology physicians for further assessment and care.
Qualifications
Urological experience preferred. Must have knowledge of pharmacology principles, surgical procedures and in-depth anatomy; skill in manual dexterity; ability to access clinical situations and initiate appropriate treatment, interpret laboratory data, respond to emergency situations, coordinate work schedules to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency and ability to recognize and document any pathophysiology. Ability to appropriately function in the electronic medical records environment in both Cerner EMR (hospital) and Athena EMR (office practice).
