Job Summary:
This Clinical/Translational Research Coordinator II position will combine wet lab procedures (ex vivo human lung experiments) and patient-facing translational research activities (lung transplant related research studies).
The candidate will be responsible for coordinating and experimental execution of ex vivo human lung research inclusive of surgical preparation, sample collection, set-up, and post experiment tissue collection and break-down, interacting with personnel from VUMC and collaborating organizations to assure all regulations are followed in accordance with federal guidelines, Vanderbilt Policy and Procedure, and research protocols. The candidate will, also, recruit blood donors and ensure that consent documents are signed and dated and blood drawn in accordance with IRB guidelines and protocol. The candidate will be responsible for managing experimental procedures, randomization, and files necessary to complete each study, including database tracking of each experiment, demographic information on lung donors, fees pertaining to lung procurement and blood donation. The candidate will maintain accurate and timely documentation and communication with investigator, Participants, IRB, lung team members, and other research related entities.
The candidate will, also, work with a team of research nurses and coordinators on a variety of translational studies involving lung transplant recipients. This role will include consenting patients, collecting biospecimens in both inpatient and outpatient settings, assisting with data collection and record keeping, and processing biological samples.
Department Summary:
Our mission is to promote multidisciplinary science and training among investigators across fields and career stages to drive clinically meaningful advances in our understanding of sepsis and critical illness. The major focus of this laboratory is to define mechanisms of lung and other organ injury in critical illnesses such as sepsis. We utilize translational methods including primary human cells, animal models, and the ex vivo human lung.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Plans and executes ex vivo lung perfusion experiments including performing necessary dissections, administering proper treatments, recording, and analyzing results
Trains, then performs blood collections for all experimental procedures, including consenting blood donors and filing invoices for payment.
Becomes proficient at obtaining all experiment samples such as pre and post fluid and tissue collection from ex vivo human lungs.
Becomes proficient at obtaining biospecimens from translational/clinical study participants, including on samples obtained by our research nurses.
Understanding and capability to accurately and competently perform the procedures required of each study protocol, including software usage and database management.
Knowledge and understanding of policies, procedures, and regulations governing these projects and ensuing that all approvals have been made for the implementation and conduct of this research.
Knowledge of regulation governing the conduct of research, inclusive of FDA, OHRP, GCP/ICH. And HIPPAA when applicable
Understanding and capability to accurately and compliantly perform the procedures required of each study protocol, working collaboratively with other staff and departments, in safely and accurately performing study procedures such as assessing donor lung or patient eligibility and recruitment, arranging necessary schedules and procedures, completing required documentation, conducting laboratory and diagnostic studies, etc. Ability to identify and troubleshoot problems
Proficiently prepares and processes new IRB research proposals, amendments, continuing review applications in accordance with institutional and departmental policies and procedures and federal regulations
Identifies, procures, and maintains equipment and supplies needed to fulfill project requirements (locally and across multiple sites, if required)
Accurately and compliantly maintains necessary documents and forms, such as experimental data, invoices, and consents
Participates in the determination of eligible candidates for study participation, assuring participants fulfill eligibility requirements.
Assures research information is collected and stored in a manner that is compliant with regulations/policies and good clinical practice.
Performs packaging and ships study specimens (blood, urine, etc.) to the sponsor or laboratory in accordance with sponsor and shipping guidelines and regulations, maintaining appropriate documentation
Utilizes or acquires knowledge of disease processes studied by the research group and actively seeks new learning opportunities, seeing learning as part of work
Engages in open communication with study organizers by providing them with contact information and being available to answer, address or refer their calls
Participates in and maintains certifications and training as required by Vanderbilt
Participates in meeting and activities related to research, including a weekly lab meeting and small group research meetings
Furthers knowledge by completing more advanced job-related educations (such as Research Support Services Boot Camp Follow-up). Actively seeks new learning opportunities, seeing learning as a part of work. Develops and achieves personal and professional goals
TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES
* Clinical Research (Novice): Can research problems that span several areas of the department. Develops and writes basic trial protocols. Knows what information is available in the company. Designs data collection forms. Has developed networking skills which assist in researching issues.
* Study Design & Conduct (Novice): Applies qualitative and quantitative research methods to perform preparatory, regulatory, and analytic tasking within the life cycle of a study.
* Project Coordination (Novice): Reviews specific project related documents for completeness and accuracy and ensures project status reports are received, when due, from project managers for all approved projects. Provides administrative and logistics support for various project meetings, training, workshops and facilitated sessions. Coordinates and tracks all work requests to ensure on time project delivery. Keeps project plans updated and ensures key milestones and dependencies are understood. Responsible for record keeping for project meetings such as issues logs, gap analysis sheets, meeting minutes, making copies, team event planning and execution, team travel, on-boarding activities for contractors or consultants, set up and maintenance of project repositories.
